I need to repair a couple of sections on my Carolina Skiff. Take a look at the pics and give me some advice. I'm new to this and would love to hear from experienced people. I need help with materials, techniques, etc. Thanks so much!

Give it to me I'll fix it and make sure it doesn't break again

:laugha: Yea I bought it like that and now I want to fix it right.

Looks like normal Plymouth ramp rash

macojoe 12-13-2007 04:40 PM

Chip away any lose stuff, add sand around the rash 3" all the way around, add some cloth and resin, sand to make look good top off with gel coat, I hate gel coat cause ts thin and hard to deal with, IMO I would use Marine Tex for the toping.

Just cover some how cause the way it is will asorb water and you will have worse problems later on!

Looks like someone just tried to fix it by painting on fiberglass.
Sand it all off tapering out past the chip areas in a 6 x wide to 1 x deep ratio. it really doesnt look like a glass job, more like a marine tex and sand smooth job. You won't be doing it outside you need a heated space, in the 50's to get it to set right area.

the extra painted on fiberglass should come off with acetone and some elbow grease

thefishingfreak 12-13-2007 09:47 PM

take some 80 grit on a block and get all that other crap outta there.
fill it with kitty hair fiberglass and block it out strait. repeat if ness.
someone tried to fill it with strait resin.

thefishingfreak 12-13-2007 09:48 PM

yeah what he said.
didn't read the whole thread.

Does it go deep? From the pics it looks lie it might just need gel coat. If so its fairly easy, get a gel coat repair kit or use marine-tex. Put on enough so that you will have to sand it to get it even with the hull. After it cures sand with finer and finer sandpaper.

Perfect, thanks guys! Sand paper and Marine Tek it is. It isn't deep but it's not pretty either. I just worried about glass damage. Sounds like a job that will wait till spring because I don't have a garage. Thanks again!

bumper boats, next spring hit the dock with the other side to match :rotfl:

nah.. listen to them, sounds right to me
