tail dressings

curious for input on a bad weather day...

On these four types of plugs
pencils
needlefish
danny/metal lip
spook

what type of tail hook dressing are you using??

feathers?
bucktail?
Teaser only?
Siwash only?
Calftail hair?
Treble only?
or a combo of each??

thanks...question probably alittle late...I have tied a couple hundred of each:yak:

pics ALWAYS welcome...please!!!!

I personally like to dress my needles with long hackles of corresponding color(to the plug). For metal lips a little bit of white bucktail. And for the spooks and pencils I ussually just leave an undressed treble.

My 2cents

Metal lip.......no hook just a little bucktail and some thin hackles
Needle........same dressing on a siwash, but often you don't want any or the profile gets too long
Spook.....better action without, anything that adds drag to the tail is counterproductive.
Pencil, less critical than a spook, particularly if you fish them fast, but I like them slow and gliding a bit so I stay away from dressings.

I don't care for any of the synthetics...
Short hackles are nice on metal lips it breathes when u stop em..

[QUOTE=mrstriper;547556]curious for input on a bad weather day...

On these four types of plugs
pencils- plain treble
needlefish- plain treble unless it's a hab's, i stick with a si-was w/ hackle or bucktail and a hint of crystal flash
danny/metal lip- depends.....some times just a teaser, dressed si-wash, plain treble or dress treble
spook-naked treble

added preference above. to be honest I don't think it matters all that much. i like to try different combinations.

Bear's Den in Taunton is well stocked. Orvis shop in Chatham probably has what you need as well.

M&D's doesn't have the largest selection of tying supplies but I always find that they have the best bucktails. They do have pretty much everything you need for plug dressings. Saltwater Edge is another obvious winner.

pencils-"usually" none.....

needlefish-none(on the ones I mostly buy, namely Gibbs,Afterhours and Superstrike) though on the ones I make I tie a Seaducer/type med/long saddle hackle water-pushing huge tail.

Swimmers-I don't add any ...go w/what the maker's put on there but on my own metal-lips I like a small hackle /bucktail in matching colors

Spooks-none, ever.

Jigman 12-22-2007 05:49 PM

Pencils and spooks, plain treble. Dressing dampens the action.
Needles, doesn't matter, I can't catch on them anyway :fishslap:
Swimmers, depends on the style and hook configuration. A pikie with a belly and tail hook, I leave them plain. Danny with two belly hooks, I use some bucktail on a piece of wire (no tail hook). Adds to the action.
