Thames River
 

I am going to be spending a week at Mohegan Sun in April, but I don't gamble (my friends will carry my share). I was looking to do some fishing along the Thames because I have heard nothing but good things about fishing in that area. In preparation, I was wondering (roughly) if the salt front runs up that far and what to expect (Please, no spots) or should I head further south to the coast.

you'll need a liscence for starters.I beleive they have a 3 day in conn.

I have been told by several people who fish it, say you really need a boat, that the fishing from shore is not very good.

take a ride up rte 12 and go to fish connection in preston ask jack or joe and they will tell you where to fish at that time of the year and what spots are producing

In April, there are fish, but mostly dinks. Wait a month, and the bigger bass will be following the Alewifes and river herring up the Ct. rivers.:wave:
Later April, maybe.

There are shore spots that will produce in April but a lot depends on water levels for access. Better later in the month than earlier. The fish connection will give you the scoop.

Don't know how far your willing to travel from Mohegan but the closer to the shore the better. Sometimes if your lucky later April might see some bigger fish and like the others said unless your in a boat I wouldn't expect to catch anything without bait. Bloodworms typically do well that time of year.

the shore fishing is good, it's the access that sucks. there are spots that produce very well from shore you just need to take a good look around. good luck

what he said. i never really enjoyed fishing the muddy Thames as much as I have CLEAN open Rhody water.

the DEP pier offers access, and is well-known.

frankly, i think the Thames is better fished by boat deep in the winter for folks who are going through striper withdrawl.

you know, i'm not one to frequently burn spots, but if you're in the area, a trip down to Ocean Beach in New London is worth it. nobody goes there, there's plenty of parking, and just as many schoolies that time of year. check out the herring coves. the n.e. fisherman mag features it every winter.

I fished there for years until I found some very productive Mass water for holdovers, but you can have some unbelievable days. This warm-up should be prime time for the Thames and should increase your odds from catching from the docks. This one came on a similar warm-up one Feb. From shore that bank behind me in the picture is a prime spot and you will see many fishing on that bank.
