Va bill to phase out comm menhaden harvest

Va is working on a bill that will reduce the harvest by 20% each year till 2013 , when there will be no comm harvest :rtfm::musc:

HB 303 Moratorium on the harvest of menhaden for commercial purposes.
Paul F. Nichols - Elec 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary as introduced:
Moratorium on the harvest of menhaden for commercial purposes. Decreases the annual cap on the harvest of menhaden for commercial purposes by 20 percent each year for five years until a moratorium is reached beginning in 2013. The moratorium will apply to the entire commercial fishery for Atlantic menhaden. Current laws set a harvest cap of 109,020 metric tons and only for the purse seine fishery for Atlantic menhaden that manufactures menhaden into fertilizer, fish meal, and oil.

Thats good news. I just want to point out that that is only for reduction into meal, fertilizer etc... it still allows bait catches....

Pretty good. Though I think there could still be a commercial harvest - I'd like to see maxed at 30% of current regs. This will allow some and still have commercial availability of the stuff you need Menhaden for (Omega 3, WD40 :hihi: ) and not for the stuff you don't : fertilizer, cat food, machine oils...

I worry what they will use to fill the void in those materials.
Whats next, going further down the food wed and vacuuming out Krill to make WD40??? Then what happens? Since they aren't food for Striper's will it get the same opposition?

Theres plenty of other sources for omega oils like flax seed and blue green alage. Many of the Omega oils from menhaden are loaded with pcb's and mercury. Just got done reading Most important fish in the sea. Great book !!

I'm not privvy to all the details, but would guess the bill reached its current status due to some degree of pressure(and $$) from a large consituency. The anti saltwater license crowd should take note. Just my guess.

Sounds to me like you're not going to be able to get them for bait once the moratorium is fully in effect, unless you go catch your own.

This is good because from the sounds of it we won't be seeing much for mackerel !
Last year was bad and my guess is this year will be worse !
