Superstitious?

Got any about fishing?
"How's the boat been running?" is the kiss of death for me.

Gunpowder 01-22-2008 07:51 PM

gotta love bringing the camera on board. every single time its there.... no fish are caught. that i think is the number one for me.

Rob Rockcrawler 01-22-2008 08:32 PM

I second the camera. Sorta. 2 years ago i brought it all the time and had a lot of nice pics. This year started bringing it and it wasnt pretty. So i didnt take it anymore. Oh yeah, the rest of the season sucked too. Maybe it wasnt the camera afterall. Its not really a superstition but i never fish the first eel i grab from the bucket. Always search for another one that isnt so easy to catch.

I hate when Someone says Good luck before I go fish

Tagger 01-22-2008 09:09 PM

I hate when someone starts spouting how great we're going to do ... might as well turn around and go home right then ..

spence 01-22-2008 09:47 PM

I always vow not to catch anything big...hey, it helps make the pain go away.

I gotta admit I've become obsessed with the first cast curse. It's happened to me so many times that I find myself reeling in too fast or casting in the wrong place or doing something wrong the first cast just so I don't catch a fish on the first cast of the night! problem is, I know I could be screwing myself since the first cast is such a high percentage one. I don't take it too far though, just the first cast of the night, not like the first cast at a new spot or anything like that.

Zeno 01-23-2008 05:07 AM

Don't ever wish me "good luck"
I hate that

NIB 01-23-2008 05:38 AM

I caught a 35 Lber on the first cast one time I picked up and left..

Bananas
Cameras
Usually the Space Jam stuff brings me luck, except for that last time on Cutty!:smash:

Now where have I heard that one?

But on the other habd it lead to the best night fishing of 06'.

I have several but the most frightening is fish on on the first cast.

Trips over, pffft!!!

lurch 01-23-2008 08:47 AM

If I know I am going away for a weekend I will not shave for as long as possible...longest going without shaving for fishing was 3 weeks.

If I get up for a morning trip I will not brush my teeth.

I also had a lucky Tilley hat that used to wear all the time but I took the family to Mickey's house and lost the hat....STILL devastated :(

WadingWill 01-23-2008 09:05 AM

For some reason I feel like I have better luck fishing on an empty stomach when I'm hungry, so I try not to eat much before I go. I also did the beard thing for over a month.

InTheHole 01-23-2008 10:29 AM

The following were told to me by a friend who used to guide out of Cutty

no whistling
no bananas
don't say "pig"

Originally I thought he was kidding till one night I began to whistle and he about went off his nut!

Pete F. 01-23-2008 01:00 PM

Fish on first cast has cursed me more than once.

JPowers 01-23-2008 01:09 PM

Buy a nice big insulated fish bag to hold all those 40#+ fish you're expecting to nab.

You'll be blessed with twinkies for at least a year.

RIJIMMY 01-23-2008 01:11 PM

if I forget to wear a hat, I wont catch any fish.

On the positive side, I beleive I need to talk to my eels.

OLD GOAT 01-23-2008 01:55 PM

Gota have a red hankie

eelman 01-23-2008 02:16 PM

Must have a "Hat" and for me it must be on Backwards while fishing.

Must shower before fishing no matter if its in the middle of the night or not...Have to do it...Steve and I call this "prepping up" Its a Must!

Only use Irish Spring original soap(only when fishing)

Every single step that I have done for many years must be repeted the same exact way...I will not leave the house unless its done in the order that I have always done..

Never wait to wash the gear off, cannot go to sleep unless its done the second I get home..

Must change my line every two trips no matter if fish were caught or not...

thats a pricey superstition...

i haven't found a good one yet.. need to catch something good. and then figure out what i did different.

Joe 01-23-2008 02:38 PM

No swearing at the fish. No use of foul language when discussing fish.
"No c'mon you blankety blank fish, hit!" I've asked people not to swear at the fish and I've told them that I won't fish with them if they continue. Not kidding.

It's ok to use foul language when talking about people though - otherwise the language is not descriptive and it doesn't ring true.

NO BANNANAS on the boat
NO BANNANAS at the Derby House
NO BANNANAS in the car when fishing

NO BANNANAS Ever in the area of fishing...no Bannana Cookies, Bannana nut muffins...nothing...NO BANNANAS

Ask Raider Ronnie about the day we had a 6 person charter that lost twelve shots of wire over four hours while every other boat was slamming the fish around Race Point....then...the dreaded Bananna came out...trip is over...into P-Town Harbor we go...get the bannanas off the boat...clients are told to go to lunch and be back in an hour...Ronnie and I get a taxi to Nelson's...new spool ofwire...meet the clients...back to Race Point...90 minutes later...6 clients with 2 fish over 20lbs each...time to go home

then there was the time Captain Alan and I took two other friends including my GF out east chasing footballs...average catch per boat that day was 6 or 8 fish and we only landed two and raised one more...on the way in we were eating some cookies and talking about what the hell went wrong...then I ask what kind of cookies we were eating as they had an unusual taste...that's right...DAMN BANNANAS

Many Many stories like this...so my point is....NO BANNANAS

Rappin Mikey 01-24-2008 12:32 PM

I don't know if it would be considered supersticious or religious, but I always belt out a few Hail Marys on the way to fish.

BrianS 01-24-2008 01:08 PM

my hat... if i forget it.. im not happy

and my mojo rag... i bought one of those green towels at a army navy store like 6 years ago... i bring it to every trip... ive forgotten it at the canal before and two weeks later, it was still there... its my friend and has always been there for me....

Vogt 01-24-2008 02:39 PM

Im affraid to bring cameras, and the fish on the first cast.

Im also a little superstitious of nights that look TOO nice, water that looks TOO nice etc., I have had some horrible nights in those cases. But that doesnt neccessarily mean I wont go out.

angler229 01-24-2008 03:54 PM

For me its hats, and its not just having one with me. I have some that if I wear I couldn't catch a fish to save my life.

EarnedStripes44 01-24-2008 04:14 PM

thunder in the distance

JohnR 01-24-2008 04:16 PM

I'm so superstitious I skipped right to the end and didn't read any of this :eyes:

vineyardblues 01-24-2008 04:23 PM

Good question George :grins:
For me the kiss of death is the word "guarantee "
guarantee we will catch fish ...lol

Just like the old cooking show , I think his name was Justin Wilson
he would say it a lot and he also said "just a little bit of wine"
and drink down a glass full !!
