Rumors of a 73

I have received two calls today from peeps telling of a 73# Striped Bass caught form a boat this morning off Virginia Beach. Damn nice fish if it turns out to be true!!!!!!!

UserRemoved1 01-23-2008 04:48 PM

True. Caught on a red/white trolling swimmer plug.

BIG fish

Slingah 01-23-2008 05:32 PM

holy cow!!! nice fish....and on a plug to boot :kewl:

Three of those guys look like they are really pi##ed off that it wasn't their fish. Or maybe they are wanted in three states and aren't thrilled about getting their picture taken. Even the happy guy is a little bit cooler than he ought to be. Meanwhile.... wow. LAAHGE!!

Brother Brian 01-23-2008 07:38 PM

In the original pic I saw, the guy on the far right (white boots) is the catcher.

Katie 01-23-2008 08:26 PM

HOLY!!

btw. found the other picture.

I was thinking maybe it would have been Tony Hill, but that don't look like Tony Hill.

Guy's name is Fred--forgot the last name.

That Delaware Bay area has produced some huge bass over the past few seasons hasn't it. Nice fish, I could die happy, no wait, I'll die AFTER the Pats go 19 & 0!

numbskull 01-24-2008 07:35 AM

His brother in law probably owns a dragger, the fish is full of yoyo weights, it looks bigger because he is holding it out towards the camera, it has been dead a long time, a coyote already ate it, no way that fish ate a plug, that guy didn't earn it as it wasn't his boat, he should have released it. There, that should cover it. :tooth:

I know you post was "tongue in cheek", but this fish is only 5 pounds off the world record. Still a huge accomplishment.

Blitzseeker 01-24-2008 08:48 AM

Now that, Numbskull, is a funny post. Good stuff.

stripersnipr 01-24-2008 09:09 AM

Alway's 73, never 74.........what's up with that? Do the Fish get stupid when they hit 73#?

BasicPatrick 01-24-2008 09:31 AM

IF that fish had a bit more belly...damn...I bet at some time in the recent past......the world record is out there....soon

Yes, I got the joke...but for a second, I thought I was at that place where they treat you like a king for catching the fish of a lifetime....Rodney King...

Flaptail 01-24-2008 10:04 AM

Good for him but....

Why is 73 lbs the most repetetive in lb. class near the top end?

Great fish, maybe I missed it but what was it cuaght on? bait or lure?

Just remember, if one that big got caught there are surely some bigger than that left to be caught.

I always think to myself when fishing a piece of water, "if you could see the biggest bass out here right now you would probably be amazed".

Did this fish go to market?

Well congrats Fred but do get your teeth fixed for goodness sake.:tooth:

Numbskull you forgot the scraped off scales, and if those funny shapes were net marks

And the ever popular "boat fish don't count" :hihi:

My favorite comment so far was the guy on SOL who said something like, "It doesn't look 73# to me--I'd say high 50s or 60".

Like he's seen a lot of high 50s and 60s to be able to tell :rollem:

Good Luck Billy

Canalman 01-24-2008 04:37 PM

I saw some different pics of the fish today... sorry I cannot post them... but it was 51 inches long with a 31.5 inch girth... you have NOT seen a fish like this... absolutely huge--insane!

CowHunter 01-24-2008 04:56 PM

Ive been back and forth to VA quite a few times in the last 6-7 weeks and gotta say, there have been some real big fish caught down there. I would be willing to bet thats where the next world record will be coming from. Guys have been just figuring out alot there in the last few years. The eelin' thing just took off the last few years, and now way more people fishing. Totally different type of fishing than up this way. The fish just have way more girth down there. If guys saw the amount of 4-6" Pogies down there it is pretty sick, sometimes 20-30 feet thick. your line shakes as you drift through the schools which are acres and acres long. In any case, there have been at least 4 60's that I know of in the last few weeks and many, many more 50's. which, by the way are caught by someone on nearly a daily basis. If you look at the 73, the length isnt impressive at all...52"??? The fish just dont get the girth up in the Northern states as down there...way more bait I guess....On a side note, as far as numbers go, they are way down from last year. Guess that will be the case as each year passes. Hope to a great 08' to everyone...

The video does this fish some real justice. Amazing...

Surfpirate 01-24-2008 08:30 PM

I was sent an email that states the fish was caught on a red head Mann's tidewater stretch 20+ plug.

can anyone confirm?

ProfessorM 01-25-2008 11:19 AM
