200sq ft and you need a Permit. Also lots of places where you can't use it...
As far as recommending one Memphis. I have/had a seine that i used for years to gather silversides... also had a cast net made by them that i used to throw off the pier for tinker mackerel... |
gill nets
Go to R&R marine in Hingham, they don't stock them but they can get it for you. I have a 50 ft. by 8 ft. with a 2 in. mesh that works great.

so where does one purchase the permit to allow you a net greater than 200sq ft? for aquiring bait, non commercially. i found the commercial application..no rec?
|
There is none Christian, in MA. there has been a moratorium for some time, unless you already hold one from years back. In the other new england states I'm unaware of their regulations.

Not crazy about gill nets. They only work in the darkness, they tare easy, because pogies are feeble gill nets kill most of your catch. Like anything else there is technique to using it effectively. I found it useful for small concentrated schools when bait is scarce. If your not familiar with gill nets you will find yourself aggravated for just a few pogies.

Goose, I would only be setting the net targeting a concentrated school. I would not be leaving the net to fish for any period of longer than maybe a half hour. |
Christian,
Email or call the DMF for the application. It is not easy to find but it is attainable. There is NOT a mortorium on gillnets over 200sq ft for the purpose of obtaining non commercial bait. It is just another $30 Tax! You may want to look into a nice cast net too. A Calusa. A little coin but if you get good at it it is easy than a gill net especially if your fishing alone a gillnet can s*ck. No I don't have a throw net yet but am thinking of it, just takes some practice. |
Seriously, you can get one of the larger throw nets if the regs discourage the use of a gill net. A friend of mne does quite well with a heavy throw net provided the schools are fairly dense and you're less than 15' of water.
|
any throw net over 7 feet you need an inshore net license.
|
Christian, I apologize for the bad advice,Beamie is 100% correct. I remember a friend of mine trying to obtain one years ago and that was the story he gave me. :tm:
|
thank you!
