Jig Hooks...what are your favorites?
 

I am looking up the strengh of some of my bucktails this year. I am looking for a real good 8/0 - 9/0 good strong (pref fordged) jig hook. What do you canal guys like to use?

Have you tried the gami jig hooks?

Good strong jigs at Cape Cod Charlies in Bourne, I don't know what hook they are.

Up to 8/0 we use Mustad 34184. There is also the short shank 34185 but i like the long shank 34184. The 8/0 34184 is huge compared to the 7/0 so i think its all you need. If you want to go 9/0 , mustad makes a different hook but i forget the model number. the 8/0 34184 is so huge i don't know why you would want bigger.

Mustad 91715 seem to be the more popular and widely used hooks.

are you guys talking about hooks with the weights on them already or just hooks?

Hooks only....pour your own jigs.

That was what I was looking for guys. Thanks. I think I will get the tried and true Mustads 8/0's (forged) but will try a box of the Gamis. Although I think this is the same hook (gami) in the ronzi jig head which did bend a bid last season. I haven't use the Eclaw hooks in jigs before.

My wife asked me what I wanted for my Birthday....I said a few more jig molds and a couple hundred # of lead.

That is a good idea. Last year while hanging around the yard they asked me if I wanted two keeled sail boats for free as they were taking up space in their boathouse and owners were not to be found. He said...If you want it take it cause it is going to the crusher next week, we need the space. They both needed some serious work and most of the related parts were no place to be found so I passed (and I really don't need to be adding to my current "fleet") But I bet there was a chunk of lead in the keel that could keep me in jigs for a lifetime, and I could burned the hull to keep warm over the winter

According to his site that's a Mustad Ultra Point 32786BLN Jig Hook. It's too weak, I wish he'd switch to a nice forged jig hook, otherwise a fantastic product.

You can use a bullet head mold and a heavy hook and load the hole with glue when you seat it. I have had them hold for a long time...until the tail it self was shot. I made some with lead and some with tin and also some larger ones with epoxy and microballons for using them in shallow water. I think the tails are killer, almost magic at times.
I remember seeing a stress test he did but stressing them in a lab and getting leverage from the point of the hook to the eye is a different matter. You can bend that hook with 50# braid easy if snagged on the point. If you use the stock head you need to go light on the drag.
