Best chunking bait rod
Looking to get more into some chunking this summer (from the surf) and figured I would start researching now. Wondering what people's thoughts were as far as brands go, whether to have one made from a certain blank, and length. I would definitely prefer it to be one piece and in between 10' and 11' for length. I have a Lami GSB 132 1M spinning and I love it. Wondering if I should have one made up conventional and cut off 6" from the butt? Looking to be able to throw about 8oz or so. Basically a good 8nBait rod. Thanks for any input and advice. Primarily fish Cape and Vineyard waters.

At 10', Rainshadow SU 1209, Lamiglas GSB 122 1MH or the SB 121 5M if you want glass. The Rainshadow is much lighter than the other two, and about half the cost of the 122 1MH.
At 11-1/2', Lamiglas GSB 136 1MH in graphite, or SB 136 4M in glass. GSB 132 1M will not handle 8 oz--no way, no how. It barely handles 6 and a very small chunk :hs: |
Not for nothing but I put my big bucks into my plugging rods and go easy on the bait sticks as the importance of touch and feel aren't as important when you chunk. I have been using the big Tica rods and though they do not have the appeal that the big name rods have they certainly have the capabilities to handle cow bass. They are graphite so they are light and have plenty of power.
I have the 11' and the 12' I use the 11 footers the most and the 12 under certain conditions...(monsters present or Hatteras on Point). The are rated from 3-8 oz. |
I really like the SB 136 4M S glass lami

Loomis 1267... 6oz+bait (4" Pogie steak) = no problem...
Rod i also use to toss 9" Tsunami shads... |
I voted for other because i cant justify spending bigger bucks on a chunkin rod. I have a tica 10' conventional that is a meat stick. it has been retired for a couple years, and maybe brought out for some chunking duty. I used a RS 1208 one day for chunking at it worked well enough. I think i was using 4 oz and a small chunk.

The 1321 wont handle chunking duty.
Lami 136 1MH is about as good as it gets, if you like glass go with a 136 4M. |
Sweet thanks again for all the advice.... gonna have to give mike at m&d's a call :hihi:
|
suprisely, nobody mention about this blank lamiglas 1502MH...
you can cut the tip from 3" to 6" to match your preference...... |
lami 1213m and a penn 980

I have 3 I use for bait, they are the lami Triflex, 9' 6" rod I use a penn 6500ss and the set up costs about $330.00

I have a 7000CL or a 7500CT that I am looking to put on this so I am wanting to stick to conventional.

My Harnell rods. Heavy duty .

i would have to say lamiglas surf king...when i throw a head and 4 oz lead oh man it loads nice!!
|
11" Tsunami two piece in conventional. For around $100 you can't beat it.

If I knew where there were some Harnell 552s laying around I would have mentioned that one, too. I keep hearing rumors that they're coming back but so far, nothing concrete. I know the mandrels are still around, last reported to be somewhere in Missouri with Jean Harrington.

1209 rainshadow.

Another vote for Tica. I use 2 10' ticas with 7000s for bait fishing.
|
The tica dolphin or the tica ueha?
|
The cheapa tica.
This is also my outflow rod, and I've had 20# fish snagged in the side to where I had to put my thumb on the spool to move them against the current (with a drag that was already heavy). What I'm saying here is that these rods have been abused and I've never had any problems. For plugging comfort (9inch storm shads, huge pikies), I put 4oz worth of egg sinkers in the butt. I can't take credit for the idea, but it balances great. |

Great versatale rod for the ditch I've had one for 8yrs.Well worth the money. Surf Series 1267C10'6"Med-Fast 2.0-8.0oz.line weight 25-40# 5/0 |
9 ft ugly stick..... cant go wrong dude
|
chunk of what? ceder, pine, mahogany..............
|
If you are chunking and don't mind the extra heft, a Lami 121-5M at it's full ten feet, will do all that. Mine will sail a 12 ounce sinker over the horizon. It's pretty good at throwing 2 ounce plugs too.:uhuh:
