Eye hooks compared to through wire
 

Im going to make some plugs but I have a hard time drilling through the wood , I was thinking of using eye hooks with a good drag could work well any suggestions drilling I tried a drill press but couldnt get all the way thruogh need a long drill bit or not ..????

mikecc at cape cod tackle has the long bits you need otherwise use glue also

2 ton epoxy and heavy ss screw eyes are fine.

i haven't tried it yet
 

but....has anyone used the new gorilla glues lately?

some "feedback" on them would be appreciated...

usually i mix up a paste of fiberglass resin and some super fine

sanding dust for a superior wood glue. :musc:

i used it,it expands and makes one hell of a mess of your work,i don't suggest for use on plugs

Raven, the saltwater dissolves the Gorilla Glue..... the stuff is pissah for other applications though

I use both screw eyes and thru wire. I drill a smaller hole first fill it with 2 ton devcon and screw them in. I've never had one fail. I recently tried the gorilla glue. It hasn't failed yet either. I have heard differing reports on whether it is waterproof. I like gorilla glue alot, but it does bubble up since it expands as it dries, and can be messy.

Mike, any chance of carrying brass through wire too? Some times it would be nice when making reproductions and restoring older plugs to have a source, especially in a one stop supply shop like yours as far as plug stuff goes.

Funny, here's a coincidence for you.
I picked up some screw eyes at Plug Fest for a couple of patterns I make that can't get through wired. I decided to see how strong they would be on some White cedar. With no adhesive of any kind in the screw hole, The plug is still hanging in my barn from a piece of wire with 60 lbs of scuba weight attached with wire at the tail screw. It's been there since Sunday night.

As far as screweyes go, I think the big "stigma" has to do more with a cow striper twisting open a screw eye or twisting open a hook & the swivel prevents that. If you add a swivel to a screweye sometimes you have to change hook placement or remove the second hook to prevent hook fowl-ups.

1/16" Bronze uncoated brazing rod from a welding shop is pretty available and my guess is it's authentic also.

well we have no worries then about breaking wire
unless the torque of a big mofo of a striper
or bluefish can crank out more than that
which i seriously doubt and then the line would snap
first...

If you want to try through drilling with a little more success you can try this. It might not look like much, but for a good number of years I used this drilling jig to make lots of through drilled dowel, broomstick and rake handle plugs. Works even better with square stock, but I had no lathe at the time and was not about to start whittlin'. This was used with a hand drill only untill I finally added a drill press with dowel center to the mini cave. It only takes 3 pieces of pine. Place the stock into the corner and clamp in place. Drill about 1/2 way and flip being sure to keep the same sides of the stock in the same position. You can add a strip to the botton so that you can clamp it into a vise. It is not fool proof, but I made lots of through drilled 6 and 7 inch plugs (5 inch plugs were easy 8 inch impossible) as well as some back breaking rakes and brooms...they'd have been great for the 7 dwarfs:laugha:
