Reel Recommendation
Looking forward to splashing the boat in April and pulling up some cod...I currently use a penn 113H on my cod setup but looking to get something a little lighter with a higher gear ratio.
What does everyone think? I would like the reel to be versatile and be able to handle other applications if neccesary such as bft, striper, tog etc...I was thinking an avet, trinidad, or newell. Thoughts? |
Here are some other options though I know many will tell you to go with the avet and the newell. i was just looking at some faster geared reels as well: the shimano torium 6.2:1 looks good and weighs a whole 10 oz. lighter. I have also heard good things about the daiwa saltist: 6.1 or 6.4:1 ratio and weighs again about 10 oz. or less than the 113H. If I remember the 113H is a 3.25:1 gear ratio so these may be a little too fast for your liking. you may be good looking at a 4.9:1 or so. i'll see what else i can dig up.

Is there a magic ratio out there that once crossed makes reeling in a fish hard. I just spooled up a 3/0 senator for cod fishing. I hope the fish are in really shallow this year, took me forever to spool.

The Trinidad and Torium are great reels. Plenty of speed to make deep water cod with 32 ounce jigs managable. They use the same gears. The differences are cosmetic, gold vs. gray, and the Trinidad has casting brakes. Oh yeah the Trinidad is way more money also. I like the 30 size, which is a number designation, NOT comparable to a 30 class International.

What about the avet mxl? Has anyone used this reel before for jigging cod and livelining menhaden?
