St. Croix Avid Spin Rod
Hello, new poster here. :wavey: Does anyone have any reviews of the 10 foot St. Croix Avid Spin rod 1-4 oz 2 piece. I am wondering if this is good match for bombers, eels, and 2-3 oz wood lures? Is the Cabo 40 too small for this rod or is the Cabo 50/60 too big? Is the Avid that much better than the premier and does it compare to equivalent Ron Arra Lami specs (3/4 - 2.5 oz)? Also, will MSBA show have any deels or is the price pretty-much the same everywhere for St. Croix and Lami's?

Don't know much about the rod, but either the 40 or 50 would be great. i wish they made a cabo .45 :) sounds almost like a colt :hihi:

i have that rod in a 1 pc. nice rod for plugging. the premier is a little stiffer and would be tough to load w/ a bomber or an eel i would think. i've got a premier 9' that i throw topwater plugs with - the stiffness is perfect for that. as far as comparing it to the lami. a lot of guys swear by lamiglass. i've got one set up for the canal but my go to rods are all st croixs. for a reel size - i've got mine set up w/ a stradic 6000 but i'm a shimano guy.

It likes 2 to 3 oz. Like most rods it will work on either end of the spectrum but the sweet spot is in the middle. And it's rated about right unlike some other manf.

Thanks for the input. I've heard the same thing about the sizing if the Quantum Boca and Cabo. Big jump in weight from 30/40 to the 50/60. I would still like to hear any more reviews if anybody has something either good or bad to say about either the rod or reel. The next step up in $will be the VS or Zeebass, but that's a big step. I rarely dunk the reels and clean them after every trip.

I have the Avid in 2-piece paired with the cabo reel and 30# test braid. My first expensive rod and I havent used to many others for comparison. I love the avid and it casts eels great, casting weight under 3 1/2 ounces and it will cast far and doesnt feel overloaded. Plugs cast well but i have problems casting light lures. With this setup I havent had a problem landing any fish so far.

I have a Cabo 50 and 60 that I use on my Avid. Either reel would be great and I have been very happy with these reels and have used both braid and mono with no problems. I think you would find the 40 to small for a 10' rod though. I looked into using a 40 on a 9' rod I have and I found the reel just a bit too small. There is a big size difference in reel size when you move from the 40 to the 50. The weight of these reels hasn't been an issue for me.

if it is a choice between the cabo50 and 60. get the 60. they are the exact same reel, except the 60 has a larger spool at about the same weight

I have that Avid 10ft 1-4oz. Use it with a Cabo 50. Great plugging rod, love it. Works excellent with pencils too.

OK then, so far it looks like a decent choice. As long as I don't flinch and get the new Lami Super Surf. Those feel reel nice but you just keep bouncing up into next $ levels and before you know it you have a custom and a VS. The wife might start getting "wise to me" at that point.
Hope to meet some members at MSBA tomorrow late morniing. Snow won't stop me. I'm jones'N |
