Observations

This is from a well known well respected bass fisherman...I found it right on!

What I have learned after 18 years in business:
1. Everyone wants something for nothing.
2. There are more experts out there than there are fish.
3. Everyone wants to be a hero, with nothing to back that claim.
4. Captains are as common as leaves on a tree.
5. People talk to much about nothing.
6. Professional anglers are the only ones who can't get paid for what they know/
refer to number one above.
7. Recreational fishermem have become more dangerous than commercial fishermen
8. Almost no one knows what a 20 lbs striper looks like.
9. Fewer know what a 30-pound striper looks like.
10.99-% have never seen a 40 or 50 lbs striper.
11.No one knows how to use their electronics.
12. "I'm Marking" doesn't mean %$%$%$%$.
13. Dressing up for the part doesn't mean you are a good fisherman.
14. Everyone wants to know exactly where we catch fish
our Fish. 15. No one will ever know.
16. Everyone wants the map marked for them-the exact spot.
17. No one has enough money for that information.
18. An awful lot of freshwater anglers are now saltwater experts.
19. No one has to "Pay Their Dues" anymore to become an expert.
20. If you can bull%$%$%$%$ and look pretty, you can be an expert too.
21. Real time and expert time are two totally different time zones.
22. Distance in miles travled over the water is different than miles traveled over the land to some experts.
23. "I lost the biggest fish ever hooked" is the lead most experts lay claim too.
24. These same experts have no pictures of any fish of any size when asked.
25. Most experts don't need any type of camera to be an expert.
Just my humble, loving, and caring opinion on this topic.

RIROCKHOUND 03-03-2008 08:18 PM

I know, I know who that is :D:D:D
Interesting points Bill..

JoeP 03-03-2008 08:34 PM

Fishing's supposed to be friggin' fun. Why is everyone so miserable, jealous, and concerned what everyone else says, thinks, or does. Who cares - just fish to have fun or quit!

zacs 03-03-2008 10:36 PM

all very good points.
and for the most part i agree

but i don't understand #22

22. Distance in miles traveled over the water is different than miles traveled over the land to some experts."

Gunpowder 03-03-2008 10:37 PM

i think he was getting at "nautical miles" perhaps?

RIJIMMY 03-03-2008 10:55 PM

20. If you can bull%$%$%$%$ and look pretty, you can be an expert too.

Thats got nothing to do with fishing, thats 90% of the successful people in the workplace, just look at me.

Hahahaha love it!

He forgot the I've fished 3 seasons I write articles now..

On a wild guess I'm going to say that was written by a native Patucket guy or Portuguese decent

Bill if you talk to him tell him Bobby and I kicked tail at the town hall meeting in barrington tonight, theyre trying to give a public right of way to some snobby lady.

to me catching fish is great / but not the only reason I go {[Except for the silly /joke RI commercial season]]

after way to many years putting the priorty on catching /but finally realizing in the latter years .. FOR me that is by far secondary ;;
I,m soooo thankful that I have fishing as my GO TO for the senerity i need to get thru the times ;;
I know for a fact that if it wasn,t avaiable to me in the last years / I wouldn,t be here & for that i will be forever thankful ;;

Ah yes, Hedonism at its finest...........

We've become a society of instant gratificationists!

And where would hedonism be w/out Hubris?

The excessiveness of pride, led to the Fall of two of
the Greatest Ancient Civilizations.

Can they relate to our little community, aka The Striper Coast?
What have we learned from the '80's, gentlemen?

Funny how History has a way of repeating itself,
usually with negative consequences :grins: :grins:!

onecastmike2003 03-04-2008 07:41 AM

Lmfao bill... 90% dont know what... when... where...why... and what 40lber looks like..? left out smell nice in the new surfcaster look.

HESH2 03-04-2008 08:04 AM

never caught anything big, never took any pics of anything i caught.there's a lot more to fishing than going out catching 50 lbs fish, even though it would be nice, but i would never know since i would release it.fishing to me is a state of mine, getting out on the water from shore, usually by myself, looking at the water, ospreys and all of natures works.totally peace and relaxation for me.and yes i do manage to catch a few stripers every now and then which is a bonus.

slow eddie 03-04-2008 08:18 AM

i've been fishing for too many decades to count. even back in the "good old days", when we sold out, i fished to enjoy. if you do not enjoy fishing, give it up. when you think of it as a job, give it up. people, this sport of ours is suppose to relax you. some of you guys do need some kinds of meds to chill out with.

chris L 03-04-2008 09:14 AM

I urinated on my shoe . Im with kilroy on a world tour

InTheHole 03-04-2008 09:24 AM

If you really want to put a lot of this nonsense in perspective take the kids fishing!
Some that appear too tightly wound might remember what this sport really is about.

just my .02

chris L 03-04-2008 09:39 AM

your oout of the hole now with that one . I do it as often as my girls want to go .

WadingWill 03-04-2008 09:46 AM

These posts have a "When I was your age I had to walk to school barefoot uphill both ways through the snow and fight off bears with my notebook" tone to them. I'm no expert by any means and don't claim to be but I do know that fishing really isn't that complicated, it's not rocket science! More time on the water=more fish and knowledge of the sport. Spring can't come quick enough!!!

thats funny . I was talking to a friend who was doing a story on Stan Gibbs and Stan Kusia.. Probably 2 of the best plug/jigg makers that were ever on the planet.. They developed alot of plugs together and fished and socialized together.. The frustrating part for my bud working on the story, there's no pics .. No pics of them holding fish ,,making plugs.. Nothing .. Just stories and memories. Stan Kusia is a living legend in our parts and one of the nicest people I've ever met . Always has a plug in his pocket to show you ,, all excited about his new project . Talks to you ,, not down at you . I respect that and hope I never look down my nose at a fellow fisher.. Hey Mike !! Serenity Now !!
