Lets talk about Knots

Albright Knot.
Over the years I've tried several different knots and found these to work the best for me. Weather using Braid or Mono as a main line, I like to use a long shock leader. I like to tie my leader directly to my main line..Mainly because I've broken many rod guides pulling a swivel thru them. I have found the Albright Knot to work best for this.. It takes some practice, but before you know it..you'll be tying it with your eyes closed.. Give it a try..I've been using it for years and haven't had a failure..

I don't use the lock that they show in that link, works fine without it..

Palomar Knot.
I love this knot.. I use it whenever possible to tie on hooks, snaps, swivels, and even plugs (when possible) to my line.. This knot has been pretty much fail proof for me and it's pretty easy to learn..

I've found the Albright (like the surgeon's knot) to be bulky and the tag end of the leader, facing forward, tends to catch in the guides. I use it still for Mono-wire connections, but for heavy mono to braid I like back to back uniknots (with the braid doubled by a bimini twist for lines 20lbs and under.....I only use Fireline for "braid") which produces a more tapered connection going out.
To attach a snap I use the Trilene knot (3 turns in heavy mono).
To attach a teaser/shocker to a swivel I use a Palomar and tie the teaser to the tag end.
The knot that will hurt you is the one you tie between your backing and your mainline. If you get down to that you definitely want to see that fish. For lines 20 and under I use 2 biminis to double the line and back to back doubled uni's. Over 20, in the surf, I figure I won't have 20 lbs of drag set so I just use single uni's.

I had that problem in the beginning, but after tying it a million times don't seem to be an issue for me anymore..

Aside from snelling hooks, the only two knots I ever use are the Palomar and the San Diego Hitch, which is very easy to tie with a heavy leader.

Never thought of using the tag end to tie on the teaser. Thanks.

what about knots?

Personally, he was better as mr. furley:cheers:

tattoobob 03-09-2008 03:37 PM

I use my own knot that I have never had fail it is a backwards uniknot the knot tightens as it is pulled on, as for joining two different lines Braid to Mono I use uni to uni.

Fish On 03-09-2008 04:13 PM

I've used the Albright and the uni/uni. I like to put a dab of super glue on my albrights mainly to keep the wraps from pulling off the main line. It is a sort of insurance policy if the knot isn't perfect.

Question: I am a lefty and have problems with tying knots, any suggestions?

Of course I can have someone tye them for me but I would like to learn.

I did print out the suggestions that fishaholic mentioned.
Palomar and Albright

Dave will show you >>

Dave, Vic, ed, Bill , they all take turns tieing mine .
Plus ya don,t needs knots for bottomfishing :fishslap:

ProfessorM 03-09-2008 05:18 PM

I use the albright for all my trolling set ups, dacron to leadcore to mono. I have never had a problem. I do think 25 to 30 wraps is way over kill. I am lucky to go 7 or 8. I also use the uni to uni to tie my braid to my fluro leaders and use it to tie my shock 40 lb mono to my 25 mono for plug casting. Like any knot you have to practice to do it good.

Flaptail 03-09-2008 05:26 PM

Blood knots for line to line or line to braid w/ a touch of zap a gap and improved clinch to snap or clip.

Perfection loop to flies and plugs when no hardware is desired.

Never had these knots fail when properly tied.

Don't see the need for more technical knots for bass fishing it's not like were after marlin, bass generally suck as fighters, couple decent runs and then a head shake or two and a tail sweep then the head turns and shes done, lead the cow into the yard.

Keep it simple, learn to tie a few knots well is all you need for bass fishing.

Clammer,

Hopefully I won't be just bottom fishing!

Crazy Alberto for braid to mono uni for all other uses. I like numbys use of the palomar tag for a teaser, I will have to try that.

beamie 03-09-2008 08:55 PM

I pretty much only use the Palomer, Uni, Uni to Uni, and albright. Sometimes on the Dacron to wire albright will hit it with some glue.

Do any of you guys who may seal some knots with glue ever feel that this may brittle some of the standing line near the knot and thus fail at that spot premature?

gone fishin 03-09-2008 09:04 PM

It's strange to hear that someone else had that same thought. I stopped using the super glue as I felt it was effecting the strength of the line - whether it was mono or braid. It seemed as the line was breaking at the knot whenever I had a breakoff. It seemed as the braid broke at the knot. I know that the knot is the weakest point in the line, but whenever I had it part it seemed as though the braid was weakened as I always use mono of at least 10 lbs. test less.:walk:

Fish On 03-09-2008 10:01 PM

I agree with the theory that it weakens if you cover the entire knot. I stay away from the main line coming out of the knot and just hit the wrap to seal it to the leader.

I think it's called the 'Blank Shooter' or 'Nut without worry'

knot question

when your replacing line on an empty spool....

on a spinning reel...

what is the preferred knot that doesn't create a knot bump?

While there are many anglers who prefer its ease and its quickness,
i'll never use the uni to uni again as it ~among other things~ cost me a monstah last year.
It could've been the leader material, 40# Vanish flouro, tied to 20# PLine???
It could've been user error, but i tied it twice as i didn't like the first knot. I'm anal about "perfect" knots.
more than a couple of the area's sharpies i've spoken to share my sentiments when it comes to the uni to uni.
imho, use whichever knot you can tie well, quickly, and *blindfolded*. practice, practice, PRATICE!! Also, use whichever knot gives you the most confidence and never be unwilling to STRIP spool line often or waste stressed leader material. The cost of fresh line/leader is infinitely less than the LOSS of a priceless Trophy!!

mono to braid ~~Crazy Al's Albright
mono to mono ~~Albright Special
braid/mono to swivel ~~Palomar or Improved Clinch
leader to plug ~~End Loop, Perfection Loop
leader to jig/swim shad ~~Uni, Improved Clinch/Uni, Perfection Loop
leader to bait hook ~~Snell

Not a fan of the glue technique, as
i prefer one less thing to do on the rocks.
Lastly, here's an excellent animated source of
instruction for knot tying and miscellaneous rigging:

hope this helps, gents :soon: :soon:

Fireline splice knots

What's the opinion on the best knot to splice 30# Fireline.

Thanks in advance,
Jack
