More MV shoreline changes...
2 Attachment(s)
Went out to chappy yesterday to have a look-see and take the dog for a run. There is another small "breach" along Norton beach. This one is small and is a few hundred yards to the east of the one created last year creating a small island between the two. The 5'-10' bluff that was there last year on the chappy side has been flattened out and the entire chappy side of the beach is pretty flat and low now. You can see that the ocean has washed over much of it at times during the winter. There are a few wet-soft areas near the new breach on the Katama side that are like "quick sand" too. My son was with me and quickly sunk to just over his knees instantly and had a struggle getting out while I was trying not to laugh to hard.
Also the island off of wasque (on the way out to the hooter) that has been barely awash for the past several years appears to be more developed. |

I have seen the island out of the water off of Wasque, during extreme tides years ago while fishing with Bill Welch, the electrican. It looks really pronounced though. Things are a changin.

The first time I noticed that island, I thought there were trees growing on it. I put the glasses on it and it was wall to wall seals |
I guess all that sand has to go somewhere. At least I don't have to explain why you can drive to Chappaqui#^^^^& ISLAND anymore. Everybody was saying last year that the breach would close fairly soon, when it seems more likely that the entire Norton Pt. barrier beach is soon to disappear all together.

Is the original breach getting any shallower? I think I remember reading that the pattern with past breaches there has been for them to migrate east towards Wasque until they eventually close up. Maybe the new breach is evidence of that starting to happen?

The last time I looked The older breach appeared to me to be getting a little smaller in width and somewhat shallower but there was still a deeper cut down the middle. It changes alot from tide to tide it seems. It might shoal up a bit now that this other one has opened taken some of the tidal pressure off it but time will tell. It is a dynamic shoreline, that is for sure.
