holdovers are eating whaaattt?

I'm thinking about hitting a couple holdover spots this week as the weather is warming up and I'm seriously jonesing to catch a decent fish. I'm trying to think of what the newly "awakened" striped ones might be craving. I'm thinking a few herring imitations, but not sure after that. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Herring are a possibility if you are near a herring run. I would also try try small shrimp or other crustacean imitations. The key is SLOW. Good luck!

Didn't find any today, but it was a gorgeous day to be fishing. I fished a variety of flys, including a shimp pattern I came up with- I just didn't locate any holdovers. I DID see a LOT of bait in my travels. Herring and sandeels... It's almost time...

At least it was a nice day. A few more weeks and you'll have a bend in that fly rod!

dont know where you were fishing, but scout out a narrow chanell with flats near it or points with boulders, etc... thats where i always seem to fine one or 2 quality fish this time of year. Also in my eperiences, slow isnt necessarily important if you are sight casting for feeding bass that you have seen crashing herring... when that happens, I do better with a fast retrieve. This is plugging but I am sure it applies to flies as well.

Try the salt ponds at night, out going tides. Ray's flies and shrimp patterns.

Thanks, I'll have the fly rod out again soon (and then A LOT). I'm hoping for a worm hatch to coincide with the return of migrating bass next month, could be good...

Worm hatch

Based on conversations I've had with my buddies who fish the Point Judith to Charlestown area, the worm hatches are already happening in the salt ponds. I'd try this weekend on the new moon. Bass are already there, both holdovers and early arrivals.
