Pencil popper help.

At the canal at daybreak. Throwing white with pink stripe pencil to breaking fish mid-canal. The fish where tailwhipping the popper, out of the water at times. They where not biting it though.

What would you do? I changed retrieve speeds many times. THe one that worked the best was a fast noisy retrive for a few yards, then I let the popper sit, it would get whacked, then I would move it a few more yards and it would get whacked again. I saw tails afew time stick out of the water.

Should I have switched colors? Whey do fish do this? Very frusterating to have all the fish out in front of me, and still get skunked - thought I had the tide and location right, and they where there...but nothing.

twitch rod fast...make that thing throw water everywhere...you might have not been going fast enough...happened to me today..I sped up and that what they wanted, with a pause now and then...
Then I put on a BigFish Danny and started getting bigger fish...:humpty:

I have that happen to me. Usually, I let twitch the plug fast w/o reeling, let it sit for a quick second then start again, this works sometimes. I also like using split rings on top water plugs.

Welcome to the ditch! frustrating eh ?? The fish and current are moving so fast and with plenty of bait, they slap and continue. I like to try and keep the plug jumping - thrashing and hope for a solid hookup. Ditch Trolls:smokin::smokin:
