Netting Pogies

Hi Guys - question for you. On Sunday morning I was in Greenwich cove snagging some pogies. This guy comes in there and sets a drift net - he has it hanging off the back of his boat for a while, then he ties it to a vacant mooring while he motors around snagging bait. Is that legal? It didn't appear to be very effective - the one time I saw him pull up the net I couldn't see any fish on it.

Ok - so I've answered my own question - it appears that it is legal - see - http://www.dem.ri.gov/pubs/regs/regs...ild/rimf13.pdf
See 13.5 - 13.8

So now the question - is it effective - If it were it would sure beat the heck out of snagging. Anybody out there doing it? Does it work?

3 foot net should catch you plenty of bait, I read about it in on the water

I used to use a 75 foot gill net. Caught more pogies than I could every use in a day. Took them home and foze them for shark bait. You just have set the net near or in the school and it will load up quickly. PITA getting the fish out of it though, especially if you want to keep them alive.

Bunker are the bomb! Snagged four just after sunrise and had four nice fish to the boat before work! Didn't need a gillnet today. FWIW, I have never had any luck catching pogies with a cast net though.

Is there even such thing as a 3' cast net?

I guess if you're trying to get them one at a time....
