June...

June...

I walk down a favorite path to the shore on a quiet June night. Permeating the air is a mixed fragrance of sweet honeysuckle and beach rose, a smell that my mind always associates with early summer and striped bass. The ocean is flat and glass like with a slight swell that confirms the presence of my favorite boulders. The only sounds are the cobble rolling as each wave recedes and a buoy clanging in the distance. Each cast breaks the silence as I search for a taker - but no bass are home. My thoughts are my only company but they don’t leave me lonely - as there is always much to think about when I cast - nights of past bites, special fish, family stuff, and how lucky I am to be doing what I like. Two hours later I retreat to the house. No fish tonight but I don’t consider it unsuccessful, just another awe-inspiring June night – never take them for granted.

Good prose DZ. I agree its fishing , not catching , that makes it a good night.
