Fresh Water Striped Bass Info
I knew this was gonna happen :hs:
Got a call from my brother in law a couple of days ago and he's already jonesing for some striper fishing. And he's been home for less than a week :hihi: Anyway, does anybody have any links or info regarding the fresh water fishery for stripers? I sent him some links from a quick search on The Google and figured he'd get something worthwhile from Bassdozer's site. Any ideas - I'm stumped  He lives in a town an hour or so SW of Indy - there is a fishery near there at a UDL with bass into the teens, figured that might hold him over until the Fall out here when he comes back. Not so much looking for spots as general info FW specific. PM me if you think it's best. Thanks - |
Striped Bass magazine is mostly targeted toward fresh water stripers. I've never read it and can't speak to how good it is though.

When I traveled with my old job to KS I searched thru the fish & game dept website for fisheries. In the mid west most of the fresh water is reservoir type lakes formed by dams constructed by the Army Corp of Engineers. I found out about a species called Wipers. They took the striped bass eggs and fertilized them with white bass. The wiper was very fun too catch and put up a ridiculous fight on fresh water gear. They weren't over 22". I would have him check out the fish & game website for species info.

 Maybe Bernzy can help out here?

Thanks, you guys  |
I know of two pond within 25 miles of Providence that have stripers::::angel:

Those aren't ponds, they're clubs, and those are strippers, not stripers....

My wife claims that she read somewhere that there's a pond on the Cape with freshwater Stripers. Anyone know anything about that? I doubt it's true, but as with everything else, she's probably right and I'm probably wrong.

Long pond got the OK to stock stripers but, the never did. |
There are a few lakes in Indiana that have stripers and/or hybrid stripers. Monroe and Patoka come to mind. Ohio River also. Lake fishing this time of year is mostly trolling with either live bait or bucktails. The stripers typically start going deep in summer. Pretty much a catch and keep deal as they will not survive the warm water. Late summer to fall, he might run into some "jump" action (freshwater version of a blitz).

You will like this site.
http://www.arkansasstripers.com/ Check out the girth on some of the photos. I still say the next world record Striper will be fresh water caught |
Thanks, Jigman - see you're from KY.
I got in touch with a friend who lives in Indiana now and he said that there are a few lakes with bass to 30# out there which surprised me. My BIL said the state record was something like 20# - so maybe old Scott has a shot at it. C&R survival rate doesn't surprise me considering the water temp, hadn't considered that. I've seen some TV shows with FW blitz footage - I want to say it was Lake Powell. Thanks for the link, too Paul - I sent Scott that link and Bassdozers too along with www.northcarolinasportsman.com but hadn't been to the Arkansas site. The story of the transcontinental bass stocking is amazing, I didn't really know all the details - especially when you consider the 19th century technology. Great stuff! :btu::btu::btu: Maybe old Scott will join in here with some striper fishing news from the Heartland soon :wavey: |
