Fog-Bow ?
 

So last night, about 10:30 pm I think I sorta saw a rainbow. Was fishing facing east and the fog rolled in while the moon was still low. Turned around and there was a big arc of light that for a few minutes was sharply enough defined to make out faint colors in lower segements. Anybody else ever see anything like this or does it mean I'm destined for greatness or something?

No he wasn't I was there too. I turned around as the fog rolled in and there it was, mostly ghostly white, really illuminated, like the Hatch Shell in white light. Numby said he could see some colors but all I saw was white.

At first I thought it was the Pearly Gates coming down to open up and take me home, but then reality set in and I thought, "can't be, if anything it would be a curtain of flames and some horned and tailed guy with a vandyke mustache and goatee smiling away"

It surely wasn't a good luck charm as the fishing sucked.

It was cool though and it was the first time either of us saw anything like it.

The fog is made up of particles of water along with impurities such as oil. My guess is that the oil slicked bay water is risen to the air therefore causing those colors that are associated with the ingredients in the oil.

The moon is the key, just as sunlight produces rainbows during the day, moonlight can produce rainbows at night. This is a lunar rainbow or 'moonbow'.
Moonbows are rare because moonlight is not very bright. A bright moon near to full is needed, it must be raining opposite the moon, the sky must be dark and the moon must be less than 42º high. Put all these together and you do not get to see a moonbow very often! To the unaided eye they usually appear, as in the small image, without colour because their light is not bright enough to activate the cone colour receptors in our eyes. Nonetheless colours have been reported and might be seen when the moon is bright. :scream:

My brother, to this day, swears he saw a UFO off Meigs point jetty. It's all good. People see some crazy things out there while night fishing.

Bah humbug! Even a god couldn't disguise himself well enough to pass as Flap, not to mention Sauerkraut! Those guys are genuine fool straight to the bone. I should know, I'm blessed and the moonbow is clearly proof of it. No French speaking, eel fishing, scratch golf shooting, cellphoneless, educated, flatbellied sage from Franklin is telling me different. Now go back to pushing little metal cars around while making Brrrrrmm, brrrrrrrm noises, and leave your kids' desserts alone.

never seen anything like it. I did see at least 10 shooting stars in one night before though. maybe thats common but I never look up or pay any attention. I would take the fog anytime.

I have seen the same faint colors because of the fog and moon light. Fog is basically a low cloud formed of water vapor that has collected on various types of particles (condensation nuclei). Usually forms when the Temp/dew point comes together. If the moon is bright enough you will see it.
