Guess who set a new Mass. record today 76 #

No realy guess it was weighed in at Westport marine today along with 29 other fish. Average weight for all 30 fish 42 lbs. If this keeps up I think there will be a new all time set this year or next !!!!!!!!!!!!

JoeP 07-21-2008 07:58 PM

Sorry to be negative but 30 dead big fish in one haul. Nice -. If that's true and all these big fish kills keep up I'm afraid there will be no fish left in the near future.

striperman36 07-21-2008 08:10 PM

Is this an official fish?

I'm negative too, but for a different reason. Without proof, I won't voice my suspicions, though :hs:

Why would you expect it to keep up with all the big fish being killed this year? Congrats to the angler, his skill and luck are to be admired, but the killing of fish of this quality for food use is sad news for the rest of us and illustrates very short sighted fishery policy.

Commercial Season?

Did they amend the commercial regs to include Mondays in the commercial season? Unless 15 different recreational anglers weighed in fish in Westport today for a 42# average or 6 commercial permits checked in Sunday's catch. Am I missing something here?

Rockport24 07-21-2008 08:54 PM

yah, 30 fish weighed in on a Monday? gotta be comms... or some retired guys REALLY got into them :D

striperman36 07-21-2008 08:54 PM

thinking the latter, westport marine is one of two commercial fish dealers I know of in Westport

Christian 07-21-2008 09:44 PM

fish from during the week, some guys stock pile before they sell so they dont have to go to market every trip.
its legal to sell on off days. nice fishy!!!
that guy is making a killing.

You're not missing anything--Monday is a closed day and Sunday is a 5 fish day.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't sell Sunday fish on a Monday.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think it's legal to possess more than 5 fish on a Sunday. "Ice fishing", while a time-honored commercial tradition, happens to be illegal.

You can't possess a commercial limit on a closed day, the way I read the regs. And you clearly can't sell fish on closed days.

(d) Commercial fishermen engaged in striped bass fishing may not possess or land more than 30 striped bass per day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and 5 striped bass per day on Sundays during the open season. This limit applies to any individual fishermen fishing from shore or to any vessel regardless of the number of individual licensed commercial fishermen aboard.

k) Commercial fishermen shall sell striped bass only during the commercial season and only during the open fishing days within the commercial season.

He's reporting a catch from last Thursday, I believe. Not sure about the 76# fish, but my first hand account said it was 19 fish @42# average. Same weigh station.

you mean this catch Back Beach?

could be

I'm not gonna guess who, but if true, congrats to that guy as long as it was caught with rod and reel.

He was talking about this Mike ;)

I wonder, though, whether the fish came from Mass waters, or whether it was taken off the Block. The way I understand how these things work, if the fish was brought to port in Mass, it qualifies for a Mass record. I think that many of the state records up and down the coast were caught offshore beyond state waters--swordfish, certain sharks, yellowfin, marlin and so on.

I just found the 30 fish part suspicious, because the way Greg worded his post, it sounded like one guy with a Tuesday-Thursday comm limit landing them on a Monday

striperman36 07-22-2008 12:33 PM

He lack of come back make me think he is yankin

He may be "yankin" because he thinks its funny and likes to play with some of us a little (some of us have known and liked Greg for a while) but he has also over time been right on the money with a lot of "rumors" emanating from that part of the state. The lack of comeback is probably just that he posts a handful of times a month at Oh Dark Thirty and then goes of too work - not in front of a computer all day :tooth: . Seriously though, Greg is real good people (when he is not being cranky :deadhorse::lm::bshake:).

Not to change the subject, guess I did, but is Bob Sirois still alive and around? Sorry.

I'm not going to point fingers at anyone--and especially not the guy involved here with this fish--but I suspect that there are more than a few RI fish hitting the Mass markets since our season opened

It costs less for a non-resident commercial license, with the striped bass endorsement, than it does for a non-resident recreational shellfish license in my town

There's a better chance of getting hit by lightning than there is of getting caught. A boat with 30 bass has to be caught in RI waters by their DEM, or it has to be seen crossing into Mass waters by our EPOs with a load of fish. Once they're in Mass waters on an open day, they're untouchable.

Sea Dangles 07-22-2008 10:48 PM

RI angler fishing Mass waters. A great fisherman who has won the Schaefer Cup. He had not had a 50# in nine years and then got 4 in one morning.

Good for him.
Good for his family.
Bad for the fishery.
Bad for us.
Bad for the MA commercials.
Probably bad for BI. Taxes are high in Massachusetts.
So it goes.
