Damm Lightning!!!!!!!!!!!
 

Argh!!!! Get to my spot tonight, no one else there, wind is dead. Start casting a white needle and get two fish right off the bat. Not big, 30 inches each but fat and fiesty. Things are looking good for the last hour of the drop. It's overcast, slightly foggy the wind is dead.

Out of nowhere it's blowing southeast hard, in less than a minute it's pouring like the tropics and without any warning flashes coming in there are bolts coming down close and dancing from cloud to cloud at the same time.

I start thinking, " hmm..., a 9-1/2 graphite rod, I am standing on a sandbar and it's pouring, blowing like the wizard of oz and lightning is crashing all around me and it's a 1/2 mile hike back to the truck. What to do... what to do???

I stayed a bit longer but it got worse by the second and suddnely in between flashes there is a silouhette of a 6'-6" guy in waders and dry top running like a frightened girl back to his truck in the purplish yellow flashes illuminating the scene.

I got to watch the weather better when conditions are like this. I don't need that kind of excitement.

Yeah, I'd just like to get to a point where I say 30" is not big.

Lightning bothers me at the water big time.
On another point, I had a rod and reel combo one time that actually gave me a shock when I cast. I couldnt figure out why my foot was hurting then I realized it was electricity from the spider wire exiting out my foot.

Flap tail been there done that probaly the same spot. I was with two buddiesabout 5 years ago and it was raining no big deal start fishing out the bar as the tide drops. Bang bang lights everywhere my budies take off running I stay fishing and I am like babies. They kept yelling at me to get in I just ignored them as I was in my zone and did not want to leave. Then after about 10 minutes Icame back to reality and said hum NO THERE NOT BABIES THEY ARE SMART and I got back to land as fats as possible, needless to say we left in a hurry as The sky lit up like 4 th of july. NOT a good feeling:err::err:. I have alot more respect now for lighting and the water and lighting period. Glad you made it out alright.

Lightning is scary. One time we were playing golf at North Hill in duxbury. At the time golf was a passion. There were clouds, rain and you could here thunder a ways off. We were in a good match and did not want to quit. One of my buds tells me dont worry it is "horizontal" lightning it wont come to the ground. We were coming up the fifth hole after our tee shots. When there was a huge crash of thunder and a bolt lit up the sky blasting a tree behind the fifth green. Crash bark and sparks flying everywhere. We all dropped our clubs and ran. Very scary.

The main part of the storm isn't even here yet. Zoom out over Li the main head of the storm is just starting to hit Montauk right now.

Wife n kids are in NB near PEI and what we got last night is going to hit them today.

I got caught out once--just once--in the open. I wound up in the fetal position in a low spot between two dunes.

When I got back to my truck and changed my underwear, I swore, never again. :hs:

Nowadays I bail at the first rumble of thunder. :humpty:

Flap I did the same exact thing last night. Got out to my rock took 4 casts and lighting was coming down all around. I then made the decision to get the heell out of dodge. Big waste of gas last night.

Anyone else's rod have a lightning warning on it? My Tica rod does (big hazard sign w/ text that says "avoid electric shock")...I thought they were just being funny but I'm not about to test it's lightning rod properties ;-)

me, as soon as I see it (unless it's way out and I know it's blowing away from me) I get the hell out of dodge

I was at my favorite UDL a few years ago and starting to get static discharges touching the guides to take seaweed off. Suddenly there was an incredible blinding flash and everything went white like someone had just popped a camera flash in my face.

Man, there wasn't an 18 year old kid anywhere that could have kept up with me running off the point with a graphite Lami pointed tip down the whole way :hs:

Yup, if you can hear thunder even in the distance, you can be hit. :(

this may sound far fetched but i swear on peter vicans state record that my uncle was struck by lightning twice. one time he was fixing the antenna on his truck in his front yard and a couple of years later he was holding onto the tent pole holding up a tarp at his campsite. both times he went to the hospital and was dismissed with just some bruising. very lucky man..... or unlucky

I was rowing out to the boat before sunrise when I saw the first lightning flash.... Quick retreat to wait it out. Radar is confirming it was a good decision.

up to 4 miles away from the "storm" it can strike

so much for boat fishin south shore this morning. I cannot believe another day of rain.

I've never heard of that before but thats what it must have been when I was getting shocks from my pole. I thought it was just static. I could feel a zap from the reel and a zap from my foot as I was standing on rocks at the short wall. It was cloudy that day. It didnt scare me at the time but for now on I'll take it as a signal to hit the road.

Happened to me one day while fly fishing early 90s/late 80s in Western Long Island Sound. The storm was way in land, hadn't moved near to the water yet, so I wasn't too concerned.

Then my rod was shocked out of my hand ... went flying and my hand was tingly and numb for a few seconds ... grabbed the cork and scrambled off the rocks, tubed the rod and got into the car ASAP.

Not good and not worth messing around with ... fish will still be there.

I didn't read everyones reply to your post Flap, but there is some good advice you get caught away from shelter in a storm like that. I used to hike quite a bit, and many times that would be above tree lines in Utah or Colorado. There are signs where trails reach a height where vegitation stops at or above tree lines and the first thing generally mentioned is what to do during lightning. Thier advice always was getting down on your haunches, hugging your knees to your chest and keep only the rubber soles on your footwear in contact with the ground. And if that doesn't work your real close to your butt where you could easily kiss your you know what goodbye.

Ah Flap I had the same experience....only without those first couple fish. Drove about 45 min to a new spot, walked for about 1/4 mile. Skies were beautiful, not a cloud around. Broke out the tacle box got a lure on, made a cast and dark clouds showed thier ugly faces. By the time I got the second cast reeled in I was soaking wet running for the truck.....
