Wood on Wire
 

I am getting a wire line setup for next season. As well as jigging, umbrellas and tubes, I am interested in trolling some large wooden plugs. What plugs are best suited for this type of trolling?

Do they have to be weighted or can you you use floaters?

Swimmer Plugs will work fine with wire. You will find that if you experiment with the length of your leader and the length of your wire you will be able to get your bait/plug down to the bottom where you want it. There is an old saying that,"If you don't catch bottom, you won't catch fish"!
If you want your plug to swim deeper bend the eye(Where the leader attaches) UP to go DOWN and if it hits the bottom all the time then you want it to go up so bend the eye DOWN to go UP.

The big plugs catch big fish if they are around. The big plugs also catch little fish. I remember one night over to Devils Bridge Rip years ago with the original Coopers Giant GOO GOO eye and we had several fish grab the tail of the plug and when we got them into the boat the little bass were barely the size of the darn plug!
