Batson rod blanks?
 

I tried to google this company but their web site is down. Does anyone out there know about these blanks. Are they any good. I know they are a new company. Any info would be appreciated.

That's a new company as compared to lami, st croix, loomis etc.. I guess I just want to know if they make a good blank for the surf, say an 8 or 9 footer, medium action for a spinner or conventional. I assume they are graphite construction? Thanks. Are they reasonable? price for a 8 or 9 footer.

I built on an su1088 blank. It's much faster than you want. I beat the piss out of it. It has held up great. I'd build on another one in a heartbeat. You'd most likely like a SW1088. Very similiar to the Sabre 1088 blank.

Thank you Joe. I really don't mind fast action on some rods. Are the blanks light (in weight)?. Where can I buy one locally, if you know? Does the shop in New Bedford - CMS have them? Thanks again.

There are two older series useful for surf fishing, plus a new for this year "SUR" series which I know nothing about.

Their SW series are very similar in action to the original Sabre blanks, which I understand that a close friend of yours knows very well ;)

The SU series are a faster actioned series similar to the All Star blanks.

The SW 1088 and the SU 1087 blanks are probably the ones you'd be most interested in.

CMS has the blanks and probably has a few ready-built rods on the racks.

I think that mike cc still has a decent supply of the blanks.

I don't know about current pricing, but the SW series used to be well under $100 for the 9' models, and the SU series were in the $110-$125 range--closer to $110 for the 9 footers.

A built 9' custom on the SW blank should run right about $200 from CMS.

Very light, especially the SU series. MUCH ligter than the Lami GSB line. I agree w/mike. If you like a fast blank the SU1087 is probably the one you would like. You can throw up to 3 ounces. It will also toss eels well for a fast rod. I throw eels with the SU1088, but I really need to get a bigger eel for it to load well. It's not ideal, but it works for me.

Next time I stop by QL I'll let you check out the SU1088 if you haven't already. Yes CMS stocks them.

Steve - they are pretty good blanks and like mentioned above, similar to the old Sabre blanks. Keep in mind they are 2 inches short do the 1088 nine foot is really like 8'10". Dave "F18" has built a few. I've built a few but I don't have a spinner you could try. I may have a conventional you could try though if you are interested.

The 1087 is nice but a little light IMO on decent eels. The 1088 is perfect for eels and plugs. Its also a bit lighter than the 1088 AllStar.

When you look at the 2008 Batson catalog it looks like they did away with the SU series except for the 2 piece SUR blank and they do not list SW blanks longer than 8'10". Anybody know anything about this?

Steve, the 1088 is a great sluggo stick.

In case you dont know what a sluggo is, its a soft plastic lure. Some guys like to rig them with 2 hooks, some dacron leader and 3 weights. There is a guy at saltwater edge who can show you how to rig them.. hes very friendly

Everyone throwing out model numbers without the suffix such as sw, su, fu, whatever. Makes a difference.

I have a Batson SW1208 (10') and it's been a great rod for me. No problem throwing sluggos and bombers and does well up to about 3 oz. , then it starts to get a little overmatched. 1-3 oz. seems to be the sweet spot. Durable, light, and plenty of stopping power in the rocks. I have it matched with a Stella 8000.

i had a sw1088 for about a year and ended up selling it, it had a good moderate action but just didn't have the "feel" for lack of a better word that I was looking for. ended up getting a lami 1081m and love it. the sw1088 and 1081m are comparable in terms of action and power IMO (moderate, 1-3.5 oz or so casting), the 1081 just has a "crisper" (again for lack of a better term) feel and sensitivity. the batson is significantly cheaper though if I rember right.

the su1087, on the other hand, I really like alot. its great for sluggos and smaller plugs, say up to 2 oz., but doesn't have a ton of backbone. I use it alot earlier in the season and at areas where I don't have to worry about muscleing a fish.

agreed I have an sw1088 it's a much lighter blank next to joes su1088 steve are you at QLane today?I live 5 min. from there I would be happy to stop by w/ the rod if you want to take a look at one.

Love my 1088.Paired with a Stradic 8000FI it is by far my favorite and most used rod.

Steve, check out the Lami 1081m blank if you are looking for a sweet 9' stick to throw pretty much anything. That is my go-to rod when tossing McKenna style ( :) ) slug-gos. I wrapped one as a spinner a couple seasons back and liked it so much I did up a conventional version and bought a back up blank just in case. The rod has great range and I have bested bass to the upper 30's on it from CT to RI to Cutty.

Apparentrly they will still build them as a special order item with a minimum blank committment from the shop. No idea what the "minimum commitment" number is. CMS will probably commit, though.

It has to do with shipping costs--anything longer than 8'10" is astronomical to ship. It's only cost effective in large lots--say 10 or more blanks at a shot.

Wow! Thanks alot guy's. What a plethora of knowledge. I 'm fishing conventional now about 90 precent of the time, so I'm looking for a 8 to 9 footer. I might try Bob at Wickford. He makes a good one and is close. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it might be something like that when I saw most everything limited to the 8' 10" size.
