Depend on what you are going to throw but either the 9 or 10 foot Tica or Tsunami would work. Rod's rating will be based on what you're going to cast with the rod.

I have'nt had a problem with 704s or 706s fitting on a modern reel seat. As far as what rod you want to put it on pick a rod that will throw what you want to throw. I would'nt put it on a schoolie rod but there are a lot of inexpensive decent 9 or ten foot rods out there. Notice I did'nt say great. I like the Daiwa Sealine for a inexpensive rod. You can buy a better rod and still keep the daiwa for a backup(good thing to have). I like 20# fireline on the 704/706 myself. Put a dozen wraps at least of mono on first, you can do more if you want to put less Fireline on the reel.

It works on any rod rated to cast 2oz or more and 9' or longer in the surf or from a jetty into the surf or out flow. Definitely not an inshore, schoolie reel. I have one (and some back-ups) and use it more than my VS 200s. I have just gotten used to it.
sshhhh top secret info that some think is not right..... sssshhh. I have stopped using the 706 spools and now put 704 spools on mine.... NO MORE GRINDING WHEN DUNKED!!!! and no, the line has never gotten behind the spool... |

Use the 9' Airwave and get used to the reel with that rod. I have the same rod and a 10' Airwave too. I have Shimano Spheros 6000 reels on them. The only thing you may find is that the Airwaves are very light weight and the reel may feel heavy on it, but it will work fine. When you do go look at other rods, take the reel with you and try it on the rods. Also, when you are fishing with others, basically and y rod you see with a 704 strapped to it will be fine with a 706 too. have fun, good luck.

Stay away from those JR mentioned, alot of breakage. I'd go with St. Croix or Star.
