jointed plug relief cut

I am getting ready to try my hand at some jointed swimmers, and am trying to figure a good way to make the relief cuts on the sides.

I did a search and found this thread from Woodbuster:

I could use the skew to cut a relief on the lathe but I am looking to just have the side cuts.

Does anyone have any other methods for making those cuts?

Thanks.

If you don't make them they still work

Layout lines and a belt sander
