Questions on Packing for MV Derby

Going over Sept 20-27.

What should I be bringing for rods and reels for the albies and bonito? Never targeted them before. (I am trying to figure out gear for two friends from Chicago, who don't have any saltwater gear.... Don't you love loaning out your stuff???:smash: But if they wreck it, they can afford to replace it, so is OK I guess.)

JohnR 08-28-2008 08:44 PM

Typed this all out and bleeped it :wall:

Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s, Pt Jude PoJees, Hammer, Sting Silver, and swing into Trader Fred's in Edgartown for some cheap Megabait jigs. Fish these with a teaser, can't stress that enough. Teasers are killer there!!!!!!!! (bold, underline, large font TEASERS)

I like a 9' light Tica with a nice casting spinner like the Nautil 6 series for getting some distance.

My experience is much greater with Albies than the Bones.

Have a great trip Ross :btu:

Will you have a boat?

nightfighter 08-29-2008 05:58 AM

No. Not taking it..... Going to charter at least once and maybe hop a ride for fuel money with a local or two....

Rods I'm planning on are two 1088s, a 1265, and a St Croix SS80M Surf Series 8 footer. Not packing long wands.

7 foot stick rated around 8-20#. Spool up with 10 or 12#, your reel should hold a minimum of 200 yds of line. I tie direct no leader, some use fluro. Top 5 lure producers for me - 1.Maria/Viva parade in 14 or 21 gram (green or blue, MAKE SURE TO CHANGE THE HOOK) 2.Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& 1 long 3. Yozuri live bait minnow or L-jac 4. Buckeye bucktail jigs 14g. 5. Line stretcher Surface Tension 21g. white. I also put a swivel on a split ring as these fish do circles. If you don't, 3 fish in you will have line twist.

Fish Hard MV Sticker

I sent Coop's some samples, I believe they have them for sale.

The rockets will be there, except maybe no bones. Wands and mushies and little nut flies, and lots o' backing. Want any fishing company out there? Still making the fall places plans, but will definitely be on island at some point for some time. Have a blast if I don't see ya before then! Bob H.

reelecstasy 08-29-2008 09:07 AM

JR is balls on... TEASERS.............

Swimmer 08-29-2008 01:22 PM

Ross you might take a couple of 2 oz. metals with you for the longer cast. Many people think one oz. is all you need and for the most part its true, but I have used two oz. #^&#^&#^&#^&s and others with great success.

hardbait 08-29-2008 08:36 PM

crystal minnows in mackeral and spro's.the shinier the better.especially if the water is murky.also might try getting some fresh butterfish, live if you can for the albies.reconsider long rods. if they break out of reach you be kicking yourself.also make sure you all have waders.

nightfighter 08-29-2008 08:51 PM

Thanks all for your input, and keep it coming!

Hardbait, I'm taking a 1265 which is 10'6", just not packing the long wands, aka flyrods.

fishpoopoo 08-30-2008 10:10 AM

ross, i'm on the island right now and will be sending you a pm shortly.

the albies are HERE! :bl:

p.s. I had a 40 fish night Thursday and had the beach all to myself. :rude:

Spoffords Needlefish and Tattoo Walking Sticks to add to the tin. Love seeing hardtails explode on topwater.

BasicPatrick 09-01-2008 12:39 PM

Swimmer is right...make sure a coupld slim but 2 oz tins are with you...I love to throw the Arra1204 (now 1203) when the funny fish are way out.

Sting Silvers, Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s in green, Marias in green or pink, Yo Zuri L-jacks, Crystal moinnows, short Tobimaru, and the never get old Diamond Jig all work.

TEASERS on each and every one of the lures listed above will more than DOUBLE your hook up ratio.

....You guys looking for accomodations should know that I am the current host of The Basic Fishing Shack...I continue a tradition of MSBA hosts that rent a house and have a revolving group of up to nine anglers that share a house with all food, coffee etc provided. A week stay is $375 and we still have a few beds left for the week of Sept 21-27 and Oct 5-12...pm me if interested. Many on this board have attended in the past.

Hmmmmm..... Just looked at my son's soccer schedule. It seems he has an away game AT Martha's Vineyard on October 11th! Long weekend!

Actually that place usually has the highest gas price on the island.... head up-island for the cheapest.

Going through the gear... getting excited. And can justify bringing way too many plugs, etc, as I am packing for three anglers...
Got a very nice care package from Swimmer, containing a bunch of the teasers he ties and sells. That will help me land some albies!
Going through metal tonight and tomorrow to figure out what holes I have in the arsenal
Thank you all for the input to date, and keep it coming. I can use all the help I can get.:ss:

BasicPatrick 09-10-2008 09:24 PM

Of course, that wasn't everything, just the travel kit :tooth:

Cannot beat a 7" amber Hogy for Albies and Bonito. If one of your rods has 10 lb. test or lighter than you you should have no problem casting it too. Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&'s and Needle-Eels are 2nd and 3rd if you need a lot of distance from shore.

Good Luck :)
