Eel Management Plan - Addendum II
1 Attachment(s)
FYI - complicated but looks like changes are coming to the eel fishery.
DZ American Eel Draft Addendum II Approved for Public Comment States Schedule Hearings for September and Early October Washington, DC – The Commission’s American Eel Management Board has approved the release of Draft Addendum II to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for American Eel for public comment. The Draft Addendum proposes a number of management options to facilitate an increase in the number of adult American eel (also known as silver eel) that are able to out-migrate to the ocean and spawn. Specific options include gear and size restrictions, seasonal closures, and recommendations to protect the upstream and downstream migration of American eel. Atlantic coastal states have scheduled their hearings to gather public comment on the Draft Addendum. While the status of the stock is uncertain, the latest stock assessment information indicates the abundance of yellow eel (a juvenile life-stage of the American eel) has declined in the last two decades and the stock is at or near low levels. Further, relative abundance is likely to continue to decline unless mortality decreases and/or recruitment increases. As such, the primary management objective of the Draft Addendum is to facilitate escapement of silver eel on their spawning migration with the intent of halting any further declines in juvenile recruitment and eel abundance. Fishermen and other interested groups are encouraged to provide input on the Draft Addendum, either through attending public hearings or providing written comments. The Draft Addendum will be available on September 11, 2008, copies can be obtained by contacting the Commission at (202) 289-6400 or via the Commission's website at www.asmfc.org <http://www.asmfc.org> under Breaking News. Public comment will be accepted until 5:00 PM on October 16, 2008 and should be forwarded to Kate Taylor, American Eel FMP Coordinator, 1444 'Eye' Street, NW, Sixth Floor, Washington, DC 20005; (202) 289-6051 (FAX) or at comments@asmfc.org <mailto:comments@asmfc.org> (Subject line: American Eel). For more information, please contact Kate Taylor at (202) 289-6400 or ktaylor@asmfc.org. |
I'd rather have to try to catch a striper on a sluggo than be able to fish eels and not catch a fish b/c there's no bait for the fish to eat. The goal should be to preserve the fish and bait over fisherman and all costs. Its easier for us to adapt than the fish.

Well , the Japanese have done it to us again with their taste for for glass eels (elvers) :hs:
Prices for eels are going to skyrocket once that happens - a smart guy would take money out of his 401 K and invest heavily in the slimy little buggers :laughs: Hmmm....:smokin: Seriously speaking, though - it's pretty disturbing to see another species heading for the brink. Screw the Whales - Save the Eels!!! |
It is all Back Beach's fault.

DZ - thanks for the Heads Up
Numby, when is that jointed-hand-carved-eel imitation gonna be done? |
Looks like you can kiss eels good bye for at least part of the fall run.

Surfhog time

Hey, DZ, maybe my reading comprehension is slipping but when is this supposed to be implemented?
|
Nevermind, Hearings are Sept. and Oct. - not exactly a done deal on closure although admittedly it's a very necessary step :uhuh:
Shameless ploy to sell Surfhogs if you ask me :smokin: |

Seriously, I will be first in line to sign a petition provided they can show us accurate and unbiased data. My layman's opinion is there are far too many juvenile eels taken, not only for human consumption, but for bait as well. I would be all in favor of gear that allows elvers under a certain size to pass through. In addition, there is a lot of good info available regarding the impact of dams on anadromous/catadromous species. I wouldn't worry this fall, but it will happen at some point. When it does I'll shave my head, get religion and purchase a lathe. Masquerading as Numbskull will be a lot of fun. |
