Cabelas in CT
 

Does the Cabelas in Hartford CT have alot of Surfcasting rods?

A buddy of mine and myself are thinking about taking a trip downthere for a day and doing a little shopping. We went to the one in Maine but the one in CT is bigger.

Any advice?

They have some stuff, but definately not a good place to go to get quality surfcasting gear. Looks like you out in eastern MA. A place like M&D's or CMS is a better call on a shorter ride. Definately NOT worth the ride if you want to just get a new surf rod. If it wasn't 15 minutes from my house, I would never go.

They have some, low end and higher end rods. It depends what your looking for. If ya go into there online catalog, you'll get a good idea.

Cabela's in CT doesn't have a huge selection of surf rods and probably isn't worth the long drive - I'm 15 minutes away and was in there 3/4 weeks ago to use a coupon they had sent me and ended up having to have them ship the rod I wanted to me because they didn't have it in the store.

Nice thing is that if they don't have the rod you want in stock you can order it have it shipped to your house and avoid paying the shipping fees.

Lots of local stores I rather shop at before I go into Cabelas or Bass Pro for a surf rod. ;)

M&D's have great service and prices hands down. I use the Natick Outdoor Store and pop into Surfland up in Newburyport when I am up there. After a little while they get to know and start calling you by your first name. I've never seen the same person twice in a Bass Pro shops the three times I have gone in there!

Gas is $ - stay local. :)

If you are going to bother driving down here I would go Rivers End Bait and Tackle in Old Saybrook CT It is the premier surf fishing store in our state and owner Pat Abate is a top notch gentleman. About thirty minutes over the border on 95.
Cabelas is something to see but not much different than the Bass Pro shop you have up there. I have been in the store twice and walked out empty handed both times. The prices are no better than mom and pop. I did return a leaky pair of waders there and recieved a new pair no questions asked. Thier return policy is excellent.

Well, I have read "the complete book of surfcasting" by Al Ristori, New England Stripers, a fishing anthology, and The surfcasters Guide to the Striper Coast, by Muller. I have taken notes, highlighter stuff, folded over pages that I found helpful. I have a rod rated for 1-3 ounces 9 feet 10-20 lbs test With a penn reel. A few other basic lures and such. Was making a list of what other lures to get that might be in almost every surfbag.

I need a set of waders, a wading belt and a few other small items.

I picked up the surfbag on the cape I think on 6a close to the RMV. I can't recall the name of the place but it was nicely stocked and looked like they knew what they were doing.

Do any of you catch bait with a casting net? Is it legal?

I think Cabelas and Bass Pro are good starting points for any fisherman. Just the more you get into a hobby, the more specialized store you start visiting.
From a woodworking background, I know hobbies can get addicting and out of control.

One more newbie question, do you attach leader to every lure?

How big and long of a leader do you use?

I think I am asking going from Lure to Rod, what is the standard items you need? Leader, snaps, swivels and such.

Its ok to go for the experience of going to one (Cabela's) but if your going for specific saltwater gear and higher end saltwater gear go to the local shops.

Cabels sends a catalog of salt water gear. What you see there is what you will see in the store. Atually less in the Conn store than in their catalog.:jump1:

The dry plus g-2 bootfoot waders are an excellent bargain and are guaranteed for life. I usually get two seasons of hard fishing out of mine before I return them for exchange due to minor leaks.

Cabela's in store exchange policy is great - pretty much no questions asked when you need to bring something back.
