Fall fishing so far

My guess is we have 4-5 weeks tops remaining in Mass and most of RI for the large 20 plus # fish . You can catch smalls :sleeps: <15# all year from shore, but these aren't the ones I'm inquiring about.
What are you seeing/experiencing so far on the big stuff from shore?

hyefisherman2 09-27-2008 08:34 AM

canal had some BIG fish the last two weeks or so...

Circlehook 09-27-2008 09:28 AM

It's still been deep in the night with eels for me. The canal and just outside of it have given me the best three weeks of fishing I have ever had.

I still think there are at least 2 to 3 good pushes of BIG fish through the canal remaining. Seems like there has been one amazing day a week followed by 2-3 very good days afterward. :fishin:

Mike...isnt it the same every year just like when they show in the spring?? or is it a bit different due to tropical storms and such? I find it is just about the same this year...maybe a bit early...I really dont have a good handle on things though...but after this blow it is balls to the wall for me, I need large...

Nocturnal 1 09-27-2008 10:01 AM

The past couple of weeks have been non stop,my best season ever by far size wise.No doubt night time is the right time in the spot i'm fishing, last week fish turned on between 11pm-3am this week it's been 6pm-11pm. All at or just before the turn of the tide plugging. The best part, not many blues!:jump1:

This time last year I was looking high and low for fish with little to show. This year has been much more consistent. I've heard there's been some decent fish in the canal too. Seems like there's a good fall run going from the N.Shore all the way through RI right now.

As for spring fishing, its much more predictable IMO.

piemma 09-27-2008 12:31 PM

I've had a decent run in the surf since I pulled the boat early. Canal has been the most consistent place for me but I have been moving around in the Canal to find the big girls.

The last week has been great for numbers in SoCo but I haven't landed anything large - hooked up with what felt like a few nice ones but couldn't get them in. Seems like most of the fish I'm getting are in the low 30" range.

Did see a couple of fish taken over 30lbs.

Well we ran into some of these for two nights in a row at the beginning of this past week.

Mike,I've been fishing the PM & AM tides with good result so far, past three outings I've have landed close to 3 doz. bass from mid to upper 20# and a half doz.low 30-36# I also noticed there is plenty of mixed bait which will help hold the bass in place.
As most of us fish certain areas with preferred tides we have pretty much calculated how many more times out one has. Also our window can close quicker due to weather pushing the bait in & out of location.
I look forward to the closing season and what I can make of it.

BTW did you get yur phone fixed yet,it seems that it only allows incomming calls?

Boat fishing has not been that pleasant. Although I haven't been out at night much at all this fall. Maybe next weekend.

Sea Dangles 09-27-2008 04:10 PM

Best I could manage last night was 37#. Too bad it was so skinny.Last year's best night for size was late in October.

Sung the Blues this morning...

Striper_Haven_03 09-28-2008 04:03 PM

Best fall I have had. Many fish 25-35#s from the rocks early, early morning throwing snakes. Still waiting to break 40#. My buddy broke his personal best with a FAT 45" 37# this morning. We had 5 fish over 30#s. Fishing all this week until I collapse.

Have seen the binocular bunch show up at 7am waiting for the birds to work.....if they only knew what was taking place at 2am! Seems like everything is happening 3-4 feet below the surface showing no visible sign of large, but they are there.

Good luck to all.

started off slow for me but things broke this weekend, did ok in the surf last night, and then got out on a friends boat this morning and landed 2 fish around 40 inches, plus a couple blues, by the way Boston harbor was unreal this morning, falt calm and not another boat around, just foggy enough to keep the crowds in but not enough to hide the pogies

flyben24 09-28-2008 04:46 PM

still very slow where i am... waiting for temps to drop.......

Striper 09-28-2008 05:18 PM

This is by far the best Fall run for me. We might be catching bass all the way up to Turkey Day this year :buds:

Back Beach 10-12-2008 08:08 AM

Bump.

Curious to hear what guys are seeing now. My best guess is we're in the bottom of the 7th inning right now.(For quantities of large, that is) A couple good pushes of large have made their way past us and we're seemingly in a lull. I'm still getting good quality fish, but the quantities are less than 2-3 weeks ago. My best two weeks of fishing last year was October 11-25th, but things don't seem to be setting up for a repeat as of yet.

nightfighter 10-12-2008 08:31 AM

On the north shore, it feels like we're getting a no hitter thrown at us....

ProfessorM 10-12-2008 09:28 AM

This upcoming week should tell a lot in my fishing area. I have had good reports on lots of bait in the usual spots but fish are here one minute gone the next. Just got to be lucky not to pick the wrong area to be at.

piemma 10-12-2008 09:40 AM

Last 2 nights that I fished have been awful. We are between pushes and we need some "weather". A nice NE blow with a sharp front and a 30 degree drop in temps will light em up!!

:agree: No visible action,my spot is flat calm and quiet when i arrive but the fish are there!

Slingah 10-12-2008 10:00 AM

dinks galore....there are good fish to my north though ...that fat lady is walking out on stage...

BigFish 10-12-2008 10:14 AM

2-3 weeks of hard fishing left here on the south shore...hearing of lots of pogies still just north of Boston? They gotta move sometime! I do not think the big push has happened yet?! Its only the 12th??

BigFish 10-12-2008 10:25 AM

Also have not seen the usual blitzes, no peanuts yet....its starting late I am telling you! Have not been alot of storms as in the past few years. A good blow would do it! Get them into motion!;)

Adam_777 10-12-2008 10:30 AM

Skunked today 3-7 am.RI in the bay.Pogies everywhere just having pogie party's nothing crashing the party all morning. They may be hugging the outflow pipes for the longhaul this winter.Big baits and nothing bothering them for about a week.
