GIBBS CLASSIC

Anyone have any info on the October canal classic? Weigh stations, kick off et al.

Mike P 09-29-2008 10:29 PM

It starts at 12:01 Wednesday morning, and ends at midnight on the 31st.

The only weigh station is Canal B&T. Bruce keeps a logbook of entered fish, so you can see what's leading.

any other shops?

Mike,
Like you said, Canal Bait and Tackle is the only weigh station but do any other shops get involved?

Not as far as I know. Some might donate raffle prizes for the spring BBQ or the winter breakfast, but that's as far as they might get involved.

Bruce usually donates a custom rod for a separate raffle at these bashes, too.

wednesday as in tommorow? the 31st, as in october?

Is there a signup, or do you just bring the fish in to Canal B&T?

Sorry--this is a private, invitation-only tournament. You have to be sponsored into it by one of the 28 charter members, of which I'm not one. And I believe that there's a move afoot to close off the numbers as they presently are, or cap it at 200. Then, prospective new members have to wait until existing members either pass away or drop out.

There's no money or big time prizes. All you get is your name inscribed on the base of the trophy which is now on permanent display at the Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay, and maybe a sweatshirt or jacket. It's just a private thing among Canal regulars to honor the memory of Stan Gibbs, and to promote sportmanship through friendly competition. The reason it's invitation-only is to keep it friendly, and low key, and hopefully to keep everything on the honor system.

TO wasn't in it last year, so that would have been difficult for him to do ;)

bart 10-01-2008 01:18 PM

oh wait im thinking of the red top tourney

Mike P 10-01-2008 03:15 PM

TO is one of my odds-on favorites to win it this year, though. After myself, of course ;)

TO is my cull boy.

I think it's anwhere in the land cut which to me means between the jetties and the state pier at MMA.

Better PM Carl to be sure, though. I don't know if you can fish the Grey Gables area.
