Rod & Reel for Trolling Wire
 

I'm putting together my Christmas list for the mrs's.

I would like to get a good rod & reel for trolling wire. I troll primarily N.Bay, B.I. and C'hunk

I'm thinking something like the Penn 330GTi and a 6' to 6'-6" carbide guides rod.

I troll 2 rigs (sometimes 3 on a good day ! ) at a time, single handed and thought the level wind would be a necessity when I have only one hand available. Other wise I like the Penn 113 HSP reel.

I be interested to know what anybody thinks

I'm getting the Penn 113 HSP and a 6'6"semi-custom rod for Christmas also. The bait shop in my town has some really nice wire line rods, might be worth the trip. I wouldn't use a levelwind with wire (unless its carbide!) it just don't seem like it would hold up to the abuse. I love jiggin wire for Stripers, beats lite tackle all day long.....Good luck!

i use a penn 113h reel, i think the levelwind guide on the gti will get cut by the wire. as far as the rod i have a daiwa sealine #sg72c extra heavy action that did'nt break the bank and i have gotten several years of use from,it has silicone carbide guides,the only change i made to the rod was to add a roller tip vs. a regular eye.

Waynes, do you jig or just troll? I was wondering about jigging with the roller tip.

Waynes, Why did you replace the tip ? Should the rod have all rollers, if the mrs is buying ? ? ?

I use the 113 H for all wire. I had a 330i end ended up using it for folks that were inexperienced with wire. Less rat's nests etc. imo the 113 h is a good choice for wire with the 330 being good for the less experienced fishing folk. Don't forget chunking and eel set ups as well. We seem to fish the same areas.

You getting set up by Ron? I hafta say that I got mine there and was extremely pleased. I have zero experience with wire and with his instruction and setup I had very few problems. As for jigging, I think I'm a little confused since I haven't tried it before. Do you need the roller tip or not. It seems to me that the wire might kink if you didn't have it ( I don't).

Lou, I am getting my outfit from Ronnie. He's got some real nice rods in the shop now. I'm going with no roller tip and spacing the wire with Dacron at 100', 200' and 300'. That way I'll be jigging on the Dacron(at the tip) not the wire. Thats the way most charter boats set up the rods so I figure if it works for them it'll work for me. If you want some experience jigging, grab 5 friends and take a quality charter to BI, you'll learn the technique real quick. I usually go out a couple times a year and its a lotta fun once you get it down. Plus you get to see how they work the Ledge;)

I'm with Duke on this one, get a Penn 113H for yourself, and the 330 GTI for guests. The 113H is a much tougher reel, has a faster retrieve, and I also prefer it's drag. I also suggest whichever rod you get, choose one with a afco roller tip. You would be amazed at how much easier it is to retrieve line. With 300'+ of wire out the easier and faster the better.

The only use I see in using wire is so that the charter boats put their clients into fish Or you have a commercial rod & reel license
When I quit commercial striper fishing I %%^&canned my wire gear// I used it to make money but it always felt like pigeons with a 12 gague

Mike, I like jiggin parachutes, not trolling umbrellas. I'd say for me its just as much fun as lite tackle (and one helluva workout!). I like it all. But hands down wire line jiggin "beats" lite tackle all day long. Especially on a warm July, August afternoon which is when I enjoy being out on my boat the most. In May when the boats are heading out the Breachway with a livewell full of Herring, I'm still in the Pond with my 8 lb test/ Sluggo catching schoolie after schoolie. Whos having more fun? I think luggin buckets of herring around is a pain in the ass and I barely have time to fish never mind chasing bait around with a net. Its just my personal preference. I've noticed fishermen have a similar progression in fishing styles and after alot of experience they seem to end up either flyfishing or lite tackle fishing. I'm closer to the beggining of my journey and still swinging for the fence;) . Plus you had fun wire lining big stripers and you know it!

But if you want to make it interesting ,use your Seacraft & I,ll use what I can get or even the old tug boat and for kicks we,ll fish for $10 a bass and we,,ll see if that nice fancy Seacraft can hold up to my piece of #^&#^&#^&#^&

wire line combos we mostly sell are 330GTi, 500L because of the interchangable spools and 113HSP. The 330 is the easiest to trooling with but make sure the levelwind is well oiled.
The rodsDaiwa SG72C semeone mentioned above is a great rod. Bill fisher rod with carbides is another then custom.

Spacing the wire is a lot of work but it is the best way.we use mostly 50 lb Inconel wire.Inconel is a softer wire (dead soft)and will reduce the amount of kinks while being smoother to reel in.
Make sure that the spacers are 80 lb dacron with teflon.I have seen the 50 Lb dacron come apart to easy.
The teflon reduces the amount of water absorbed and it will have less drag in the water.

the reason i changed to roller tips is because while jigging periwinkles the line would become fatigued and break off.;)

What has been the best way to mark the wire and at what increments ?

I have found that the 80 lb Dacron splices are the best. as far as increments it depends on the depth at which you are trying to achieve.

when you say "splice" I'm lost.

I use waxed floss on my mono lines to mark them. I've got 80# braid for backing, but need a lesson in what you mean by "splice".

Mega, you use a loop to loop connection. Its a double surgeons knot on the dacron and a haywire barrle loop on the wire. Or you can just purchase the reel already loaded with marked wire ;) $$$ But sooner or later you'll have to learn anyway.

So I'm assuming I'm going to put xxxx yds of Braid backing and then x yds of wire then a dacron splice of 1 ft and then another xxx yds of wire, etc. Am I on the right track ?

Boy, trolling with mono was easy. Oh, well just another learning process. Can't wait to try this !

thats right . some guys want 3 shots of wire others just 2 .
the splice of 80 lb can be from 1' - 8' just a matter of choice.

Also,make the loop on the Dacron big enough to put the reel thru.

i personally use a 4" piece of telephone wire wrapped very tightly around the trolling wire. i start by placing the telephone wires middle 90 degrees from the trolling wire and wrap each half in opposing directions and finish by using a pair of pliers to smooth the end of the tele wire around the trolling wire. it never slips on me and i vary the depth of the wire for varying conditions. try not to jig the exact same area repeatedly to avoid weakening the line. the splicing method sounds good,especially if you want to save a 1/2 used spool of line.
by the way i was looking at the boaters world catalog and found they offer 3 types of wire line rods for under $100.00

also the fisherman magazine has videos for sale that show how to troll wire line,al lorenzetti is the producer and you would find it very informative. (great stocking stuffer:) )
