Isnt this nice! No mention of the troops who are getting shot at trying to rescue a buddy? No mention of the 19yr old coast guard kid on a helicopter risking his life to save some moron who did not evacuate? What about all the kids and families rasing money of gifts to send to the troups in Tiraq/Afg? Nah, no heroes there!

Jim, not to read in between the lines, but I would view the ones you mentioned as doing their job, which involves them going above and beyond as part of the job description.

I would argue that your assertion, as you phrased it, does diminish somewhat the incredible acts of heroism our services members do demonstrate.

That being said, given the objectives stated in the CNN article RIJIMMY linked to, I don't think the mission being executed by the US Government really fits the profile being used to select nominees.

By this measure the military doesn't really fit. Grassroots fundraising to send our troops gifts (like body armour) is certinaly a generous behavior, but on an individual scale impacts limited people.

So I think RIJIMMY might just have to suck it up and admit he was wrong on this one.

I did not mean to diminish spence; rather imply military/USCG trained, in Military/USCG rescue situations are not 'Ordinary' people.

I agree, but even for those elite groups heroic acts are relative, the bar is just set higher :)
