Lifetime Personal Worst this AM

You would think after all these years I would
know not to look a bass in the face while tension
is on the line. My second fish and she was on the
rocks, as I reached down to lip grab--wham,
bam--right in the kisser. Thank God it missed
my eye. Two hooks went in past the barbs and
with little pain I was able to unclip the plug and
get help from John____, fishing next to me.
He had a pair of pliers that cut thru the hook
shaft and left me as you can see. Bob Hess
and John helped me up the bank (yes we were
on the canal and schoolies were blitzing the dawn
patrol).

My partner, Bob Pizzi, left after his eighth fish
and we drove to Braintree where I got my car
and drove to my doctor in Dedham. Doctor in
surgery plus two nurses who held my hands were
extremely concerned and solicitous. Doc took some
pix which he is sending me. He said it was for his
teaching but I think all three were curious simply
to see an old curmudgeon with a hook in his head.
Will shoot youse any pix that look good. I have
promised to deliver Striper steaks to all of them.

Want to thank John___ and Bob Hess and Bob Pizzi.
Most of other guys on bank were friendly and certainly
if you hit the canal soon you may very well hear the saga
of the guy with the hooks in his head. PS the plug
was a four inch Atom popper (original) that I hadn't
used in years and just dumped in my plug bag on a
lark last nite. It has now been re-hooked with single
on end and all barbs crushed. Probably will be back
tomorrow for more,

See ya on the beach.:wavey:

You could have left it in and people would have thought it just a piercing.

ProfessorM 10-17-2008 02:59 PM

Sorry John, glad you are going to be ok. Next time get a piercing from a professional it's easier.

MarshCappa 10-17-2008 03:09 PM

Raider Ronnie 10-17-2008 04:56 PM

Ouch John!
Fishingfreak almost did the same thing on my boat a few weeks ago !

Sluggoslinger 10-17-2008 05:04 PM

Hey, at least you can say you hooked up to a big one at the end of the day.

Slingah 10-17-2008 05:31 PM

smac 10-17-2008 06:01 PM

nightfighter 10-17-2008 06:18 PM

Geez, John. Glad you are still in one piece. Your hooks must be super sharp.... I'm shocked they pierced an old leatherneck like you! You better bring those nurses with you to Cuttyhunk!

MotoXcowboy 10-17-2008 06:26 PM

owwch

maddog2020 10-17-2008 07:26 PM

OUCH - my wife couldn't look at the photo. My daughter wanted to see a close up. She was like - why does that old guy have a pierced cheek, daddy? Umm... he didn't do that on purpose. The fish fought back!

Ya brave to post the picture. I don't know if I would be smiling. Good lesson to be learned by it. Now I know why lots of people like siwash hooks. ;)

Old salty: nothing stops ya ! I hope I'm that tough when I'm your age. :)

Good luck tomorrow fishing! :wavey:

Crafty Angler 10-18-2008 01:06 AM

Man, you were lucky :hs:

Well, like they say - a good scare will teach you a helluva lot more than good advice.

Certainly a word to the wise for the rest of us

HESH2 10-18-2008 06:59 AM

ouch very lucky it missed your eyes.i chrush barbs on all my hooks regardless what kind of hook it is.had a similar expierence couple years ago, glad i had crushed the barbs.

BasicPatrick 10-18-2008 09:21 AM

Damn...glad to hear it was less than i could have been.

vanstaal 10-18-2008 10:29 AM

tattoos next ?

eelskimmer 10-18-2008 12:47 PM

Thanks to all

Some smarties referred to Body piercings and tattoos, well a
lot of the guys we passed on the way back to the car had
exactly that comment to make. I was very lucky, only
disappointment was missing fun with schoolies. Ps. I don't
crush barbs on big plugs with single hooks only on the smaller
schoolie plugs. Easier to get them off and back in drink
with minimum damage.
See ya on the beach.

:thanks:
