Carving a bomber style plug
 

Besides getting the wood, I am stumped as how to start this project. I would like to carve a large bomber. First things first, I want like a 6" lure finished. What dimension piece of would should I start with. What is best wood? Thinking of buying a small hand carving set. What do you guys use? Also, what metal lip should I buy for such a lure? At what point is it through drilled? Sorry for all the questions, a bit lost. Thanks

Also check out some of the freshwater plug building sites (Tackleunderground has an extensive one). You can make plugs like bombers by tracing the outline on two pieces of wood 1/2 the desired thickness of the finished plug, cutting a gouge down the center for hook hangers, through wire, and weights, then cutting out the shape easily with a coping saw, glueing the 1/2's together and shaping with sand paper. Freshwater guys often use balsa and a little lead. If you have access to a band saw and drill you can cut out the rough shape from white pine the desired thickness of the plug, then clamp in a vise with jaw pads, then shape with strips of belt sandpaper pulled back/forth while wrapped 1/2 way around the plug.
