canal today

i got the word from a few buds that the canal had fish passing through, so at 7am i was at pole 100 . birds were workin from the sagmore bridge to the end of the jetty. lots of bait ,birds and seals .birds feeding on small bait ,dont know what it was but lots of it .only saw small brakes ,but was told that some fisherman got a few big ones 25 to 35lbs and someone caught a 51lber on a live snagged pogie . dress warm its cold in the am ....looks like it anit over yet...not many people fishing.

FishermanTim 10-31-2008 10:26 AM

I fished the east end last night, and had the place all to myself.
There were some small fish breaking, but they were few and far between. I managed to get 10 fish, with one taping out at 35".
I was pleased to find that it really wasn't that cold, compared to what they had forecast.

ProfessorM 11-01-2008 11:41 AM

No long undies needed today. Beautiful calm conditions. Lots of tiny bait and birds but not much in the size dept. I was between Sag. and Herr. run. Tomorrow is another story, N. wind and much colder. See you there if your as dumb as me.

plankton 11-01-2008 02:36 PM

Yeah, nice day today, birds working at the east end over pods of schoolies, caught a few of them, nice way to end the season...for stripers anyway.

Glad I took my peck of quahogs today, then. Nice weather plus the opening day of oyster season tomorrow (place will be a zoo) made today the better bet.

Might take another shot at the schoolies tonight. Then again, after I released my last fish last night, I put the jig hook on my reel's handle, took up the slack, picked up my bag, and climbed the bank. That might be a nice way to end the season. :uhuh:

ProfessorM 11-01-2008 06:53 PM

You are a smarter man than I Mike. You are right, a good way to go out.

Mike P 11-01-2008 09:56 PM

Well, you knew I had to take one more crack at them :humpty:

Same place, same tide, gorgeous night, not as many as last night, but once again, landed one (actually close to keeper size), sent it on its way, hooked the jig to the reel and left them biting.

And believe it or not--I actually had a 7" RonZ chopped by one of those yellow eyed devils :err:

Thought I would break this thought

I fished yesterday on my way home, and thought I would just throw a couple casts, because I had only 30minutes in between meetings. Next thing I knew I had a monster on my line. As I pull this beautiful bluefish in it managed to snap my brand new tica rod. It was a monster I measured it at 38.5". Little did I know after filleting this fish that the state record was 39". I would have pulled a fall river special and stretched the lip. What a fight.

Anyways anyone saying there is no fish in Rhode Island must not be using a hook ;). not trying to be a punk, but I am just letting you know there is awesome fishing in Rhody right now. It has been lights out for a few weeks now, and the water temp is holding strong at 54-55. so there is still a week or two left.

This is only picture I managed, but to put it in perspective the pencil popper in its mouth is 7" long.

A 38.5" blue is a true monster - Equal to a 50+" bass for bluefish standards. ;) You may have had a record since it goes by weight and not inches - 26lbs. Too bad you didn't get a better pic as well.

ilovetwofish 11-02-2008 03:31 AM

You caught the only fish in RI and I live here and fish here.Still know fish in RI.

I think you're right cuz why else would he post a RI fish under the canal thread. :conf: All of the fish are now off of RI and not in the canal or RI.

Time to get out to Montauk for first light. Damn the sunrise is early today. :rude:

Mike P 11-02-2008 07:35 AM

There is no state record I know of for inches--only pounds, and I think our record is something like 27 pounds and change. If you believe that a 38" bluefish could ever weigh 27 pounds.....a 38" bass couldn't weigh much more than 22 pounds.

Are we at the point where we are now measuring bluefish in inches instead of pounds? :wall:

ruhroh 11-02-2008 07:51 AM

He caught the fish in R.I. and said that the record fish was 39" long, not that the record was 39".

Sea Dangles 11-02-2008 08:17 AM

When is flap going to chastise stiff telling him he is burning a spot and there will not be enough room to fish there as a result of this post?

7milebridge 11-02-2008 08:30 AM

I never said that the record was based on inches just the record fish was 39" long. I am also not spot burning. Just saying that there is good fishing in Rhody right now. as far as why would I post on a canal blog thats a simple question. How many rhodies have chimed in on my fish on a " Canal post". There are fish in Rhody.

bart 11-02-2008 08:58 AM

nice fish :claps:

ilovetwofish 11-02-2008 11:40 AM

Nice fish but there is still no fish in RI.
