Who can Identify this reel?
FOund this in the old mans garage... He SLAYED bass with it
decades ago, and he has photos to show. Asked him what it was... he didnt know, and didnt really care either. I want to know what it is though... anyone have any clue? made in france, size of a VS 250 and OLD... http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84...g?t=1229223888 http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84...g?t=1229223915 http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84...g?t=1229223943 |
The body looks similar to a Luxor. The smaller ones that I own look similar, but not exact. That may be a larger one, but I don't know if Luxor made skirted spools. The spool looks like a RuMer, but the body looks different than the RuMers I've seen. Both Luxor and RuMer have decent value as collectibles. I used my first Luxor for steelhead the first time I went to Pulaski. Landed 8 steelies to 11 pounds in three days of 20 degree weather. Reel and drag worked flawlessly. Reel has been in safekeeping since I found out it was collectible.

Crack

Looks like an old Mitchell (older than the 300 model from the 60's ) to me. Weren't they made in France?
|
Luxor became Crack. My Luxors say "Made in France- Brevete S.G.D.G." I assume that is the town? Reel in post has different writing, unless they moved factory.
I have never seen a vintage Mitchell reel with a skirted spool. First that I know of was built in the 80's. Been searching online and can't find anything that's close. Can you post all printing that is on housing? |
Ru-Mer
Looks like a Ru-Mer.

that spool diameter is ultra wide.... cool

When I was a kid in the early 70's I somehow got my hands on a Pezoil-Mitchell which was made in France that looked a lot like that. Wish I still had it - have not idea where it went.

It's definitely a Ru-mer from france. Alot of the old surf fisherman used these and LUXORS , also from france, and the CRACK 300 for surf fishing. I have both reels and still use them on occasion. Most people cut the bail off the Ru-mer to make it manual. By the way, the new Van Staal reels (VS-300)were patterned after the original Crack and Luxor reels.

Looks similar to a VS what would somthing like that worth.

on the opposite side, it does say "brevette S G D G" I'll post later... also, Ill post what it looks like with the spool removed... looks interesting... nothing Ive ever seen on a reel before...
|
it's a Ru-Mer....I'm looking at 2 that I don't use as I type this
|
Just found out Brevete stands for Gautrot Brevete, a French company. It signifies that the reel is covered by at least one of Brevete's patents. The SDGD stands for "Sans garantie du Gouvernement" stating that the French government does not guarantee enforcement of the patent.

Definitely a Ru Mer. Looks to be a 401 model.

I resurected a 401 a few years ago. Removed the entire bail assembly and fabricated the 704 manual roller to mount on the Remur. Drilled the rotor cup and spool, sand blasted the case , recoated and packed the gear case. Nice feel and solid. cast pretty good w/braid. Fished it a few times. Nice slow retreive for eels and skin swimmers. The only negative is the drag. Only a metalwasher no fiber. Lost a large that I couldn't stop and cupped the spool to add more pressure. Too late, took too much line and found freedom. Retired it w/a VS250. It's now my back up if needed. All in all, light weight and compact.

drag knob is pretty hacked... think somethings missing anyways... Would like to catch just one fish with the reel my father caught so many HEAVY bass with in the late 60's/ 70's in south county.

I inherited this reel from the family of a deceased friend of mine, Dr. Arthur Robinson, of Falmouth. I think this is your reel. I myself would like to know more about the history and anecdote of these reels.
This reel I am entrusted with is a half bail. The backside of the reel up by the neck is a screw cover over a grease gun fitting. The writing on the back says: MADE IN FRANCE - MARQUE DEPOSEE. Further around on this backplate there is some writing: BREVETE SGDG. The reel seems to have a very good drag. The half bail flips completely backward. The line guide is NOT made to rotate; however, it can be easily repositioned to spread the wear. God bless Dr. Robbie; I have always called him my professional father. |
s-kraut ....... about robbie ,it was my honor and x-tream luck to be part of arthurs hunting and fishing life .he was a great friend ,i miss him alot....

This one came on a custom rod from a neigbor who passed away in the late 70's. His name was Carl Boyd. The rod is great but I've never fished the reel.
