MYSTIC ROD&GUN CLUB

2003 BEGINNER-INTERMEDIATE

FLY-TYING COURSE

Where: Mystic R&G clubhouse, Rt. 201, N. Stonington

When: Tuesday nights 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.

What to bring: Your own equipment if you have it (vice, bobbin, fine-point scissors, bodkin, and 3/0, 6/0 thread are essential). We will have a limited number of extra sets available. A notebook is also a good idea. We will also be handing out printed instruction at times. Flytying material for each class will be provided but you are welcome to bring along any other materials.

Who can participate: We are giving first priority to members, but everyone is invited to join in on a first come first served basis. Any experienced tiers willing to help out are also welcomed. This year a $5.00 fee (10 for non-members) will be charged.

Why: A few members have expressed interest over the past couple years to learn some basics about tying flies for themselves. This is the sixth year we are running the course. Patterns and techniques will be offered for both beginning and intermediate tiers. Winter is a great time to meet and share some tying techniques and stories. For non-members it might give you a chance to see what the club has to offer.

The above flies were chosen because they involve basic techniques that can be modified to tie many other different patterns. This year we will again start by tying larger saltwater patterns. The rest of classes will concentrate on tying trout flies divided by insect order. We will also tie some larger bass and pike flies. These are the flies that I use all the time whether fishing locally on the Shetucket river, casting in Niantic bay, wading the West Branch of the Penobscott for landlocked salmon, or in Yellowstone fishing for cutthroat.

A $10.00 registration fee for non-members will be charged to cover the cost of materials used in the classes payable before the end of January. In the case of inclimate weather please contact me at work (Pfizer 860-441-5771). I hope to see you this winter at the
