Smelting Report

An aquaintance of mine who delivers for Fedex and continually bugs me about going smelting with him went to the Brunswick, Maine area last weekend. Fedex guy fished one six-hour tide and caught 53 #'s. His wife was pissed he brought so many fish home to Carver. I just may have to next time. He does fish with five rods until they start hitting, then he only fishes two.

Good to hear....do you know what camp he was at....i'm heading up friday night for an all nighter, hope they are still running like that

It was right in Brunswick I think. Must all the be the same body of water. He said his next trip will be a little further north. They should still be there this weekend for you Dad.

53 pounds - that's alot of smelt. time for a trip north.

53#... can you put that in perspective? How much of a 5 gallon bucket is that?

MakoMike 01-14-2009 08:13 AM

53 pounds has to be more than one 5-gallon bucket!

The Dad Fisherman 01-14-2009 08:17 AM

The average smelt weighs about 3 oz. so 1 lb of smelt is roughly 5 smelts so 53 lbs would roughly be about 260 smelt.....and man are they tasty.

Oh Sorry thats 260 River Kittens.....

This guy is a fanatic. Every time he comes into my work he has a fishing report.
Or he is looking for one. He is going to go back smelting I would bet four more times before the ice out. I was wondering how many buckets that was also. I'll ask him next week when he delivers something else. I'll also ask exactly what camp he rents his spot from.

I'd really like to get up ther and try smelting at least once this year.

The Dad Fisherman 01-14-2009 04:02 PM

MM, just grab a couple of friends, some beer, and some grub and go....just make your reservations before you head up....Its a blast.

here is a link to a list of some of the camps up there.
