Often Overlooked Bands?
 

One always jumps out at me....."Three Dog Night"! Man they were great! Got any "Often Overlooked Bands" on your list?:btu:

I was a big fan of Nazareth when I was in High School...not a lot of fans out there for them

Thin Lizzy was another one.....a lot of great music but don't seem to hear much about them.

In the Three Dog Night vain I always liked a lot of America's Music.....as well as The Guess Who

BF, how do you define overlooked, fans? radio play?

The Cars are sort of a puzzle for me, if you scan the radio, you'll amost always hear a Cars tune on. They get tons of radio play. I think they have strong songs, but have you ever met anyone that says " the Cars are my favorite band? or does anyone own any Cars albums or cds?

I define it as when you talk about great bands.....they kind of fall a bit short especially when names like The Beatles, Stones or Zeppelin come up! "The Guess Who"...awesome stuff and "Thin Lizzy"??? Yeah another great one!

I think the issue with the Cars was that they never had that a charismatic front man that the public could take to, say like Sting.

My choices would be Los Lobos, Crowded House/Neil Finn and J. Geils.
Maybe it has something to do with being from Boston but Geils, like the Cars, get no respect and their first two albums were great examples of blues based rock and they smoked live. it is a shame that all they seem to be remembered for is Centerfold.
Los Lobos over the last 30 years have put out album after album of consistently good music with very good songwriting and guitar playing.
Crowded House makes intelligent pop music. Everyone I play them for likes them but they never seem to catch on.

Frank Zappa, Joe Jackson, English Beat, Kansas, Ruttles. Most of what I listen to is overlooked by many so way too many to list.

This was given to me by Duane Ingalls Glasscock. I won it from BCN back many years ago. Looks like one of the sig's is f'ed up now as it has been in a box for a long time.. I has hoping it would be worth something someday.:doh: I did like the band though.

Joe Jackson and Graham Parker always seemed to be forced to stand in Elvis Costello's shadow which is a shame because bother were really talented. Parker's first three records (Howlin' Wind, Heat Treatment and Squeezing Out Sparks) are well worth checking out. Jackson's output covers so many stylistic bases it is incredible. His autobiography is not a bad read either.

Incubus and King's X are amazing and have a loyal, but limited following. Check out "Morning View" by Incubus or "Faith, Hope, Love" by King's X. Amazing musicians that also add a lot of melody and feel into their stuff.

Could have picked a much better name for the band !

Howz about Styx......There 1st few albums were awesome,.....up until Dennis Deyoung decided he wanted to hop on a comet or something weird like that.

The Grand Illusion was a great album.

Also Supertramp.....Breakfast in America was another Phenomenal Album

Kevin, now I know why I gravitate to you at PISC meetings, we have very similar tastes with the older music. Old Supertramp, Styx, Thin Lizzy, and Nazareth I have had on 8-track, lp, and CD. It's funny, once these bands started to be noticed, I began to like them less. Rush was like that for me too. Once they went too Synth, I lost interest. I used to like the old Elton John stuff too, that is until he was to poofta for my taste. Also, J. Geils was good until thier Centerfold album, and then it felt like they sold out. However, I appreciate it now.

How about old Tull, scorpions, UFO, Montrose, etc.?

I also auired a taste for anything by Dylan and Jerry Garcia as I aged a little and appreciated more than just Heavy metal.

I agree. If they did not have the deaths of the Guitar and Bass player they would have been huggggge.

First concert I saw was Nazareth. April Wine openned.

UFO put out some good stuff. Still think the Scorpian's best album as Lonesome Crow. Waaaay different than their other stuff but pretty cool.

While I always like the sound of the old Pretenders my enthusiasm is tainted by the fact that Chrissy H. is a huge PETA/animal rights supporter. Never got any of my $$. Her latest incarnation of the band just got a not so glowing review.....aw..too bad. Guess she'll have to ..Go Back to Ohio! ;-)

A very overlooked artist with roots from this area..John Butcher. The 1st John Butcher Axis album (yes album) is a monster where JB shows a"polished" Hendrix like ability on the guitar coupled with great song writing talent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1dMN...eature=related

the traveling wilburys....so much talent, george formed one helluva band.

Sea Level. If you are a fan of Southern rock, Allman Bros. you should be a fan of these guys. Several really great albums. 3 former members of Allmans after the break up, after Gregg got busted. Dual drummers and dual guitarists. Unfortunately not much on the tube but here is a tune they did being done by a former member Randall Bramlett, although not as good as Chuck Leavell's band, but decent. Chuck is an awesome keyboards player and has since done several Rolling Stones tours playing keyboards as a hired gun much like he did with the Allman Bros.

Randall Bramlett I would assume is related to Delaney Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie fame - Delaney died pretty recently if I remember right, another good band -

Mr. Crafty their first album was in 77. 6 in all . I have all but 1 on vinyl and when I get some time to put on cd I will send them along to you. I saw them twice live and music was as good as the studio. Awesome band

This band played Newport in the late 60's in a place called Bambi's. It's now a hardware store off Bellevue Ave near Stop & Shop.
After they broke up Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert went with Jeff Beck to form a great band. RIRock and myself worked with a guy who owned the lead guitarists guitar. I believe he since has sold it to the R&R Hall of Fame.
