Naming a boat

I posted this in the boating page, but would like your opinions too.

I bought this 21' Proline Center Console last fall and wanna name it. Me and the kids have came up with a list of possible names.. what do you guys think? Give me a heads up if you know of anyone else up here in RI using these. Thanks.

Byte-Me (I like this one as I'm an IT, spelled with Y like computer byte)
Reel-Time (Idea from Tool Time)
Fish-Tank
Fins-Up
Fishfull Thinkin'
Get The Net
Tuna Helper
Reel-Laxed
Reel-Crazy

Not to rain on the parade, but those are mostly common names... Spend enough time out there and you see a lot of 'Reel-----' and Fish---' names...

Use something of significance to you.

My friend Jon had a good rule of thumb; if you can say it over the radio three times (like in a call) and not laugh or feel embarassed, you're good to go!

Just thought of 2 more. My wife is Japanese so maybe a Japanese type name?

Sakana-Samurai (sakana Japanese for fish)
Sashimi-Samurai (sashimi = type of sushi)

When me and my sister were kids my Dad named his boat after us....

My Sister never stopped talking and I would eat anything.....so he named his Boat "The Yakkin Seagull"....can't say Dad never had a sense of humor

Reel is WAY over used !
Come up with something short and original !

'Sakana' has a nice ring.

FYI, Our boat has two names, but no one ever uses the whole name.

Most important is when you say it fast over the vhf during a mayday call, can anyone understand it?

Raven 02-28-2009 02:29 PM

see it in the future

on the back of your boat in a dream
then name it what it's name-> already is

Bought a boat 2 seasons ago and being Polish, was going to name it "the fishing pole"... my first time out, (before naming it) I see a 27' commercial boat called "the fishing poles"... (and I've seen these guys since... younger, rough looking guys... the type that get in fights at european soccer games...) I found another name...

sakana samurai ? I dunno sounds like a P- Town boat.

Cool Beans 03-01-2009 09:23 PM

My wife thought Sakana Samurai was pretty funny.. We had a family vote and the kids like Fishful Thinkin' and the wife came up with a few more silly ones, like Sushi-Sumo and Sashimi Shogun... so I think we are going with Fishful Thinkin. Thanks for all the feed back guys.

just pick whatever is meaningful to you.

and don't name it the sea cure. my uncle has a boat named sea cure, but it got nicknamed sea curse because we get skunked everytime on it.

Name that boat!

Naming a boat is a lot of fun with the family, you will know when you have the right one. If not, vinyl lettering is fairly inexpensive (especially if you can keep the number of letters down) and works great. The radio thing really does come into play - you want something that is easy to say. Naming after the wife is always a good way of s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g up. Good Luck!

ThrowingTimber 03-02-2009 08:15 PM

ex gf's dad ran a boat name "Fourplay"

stiff tip 03-03-2009 04:53 AM

i like ""desperate one""" but only a fool would name his boat that..

CaptMike 03-03-2009 09:00 AM

there's a boat moored near me named the "last stand" I have no idea what the context is but that's the most badass boat name I've ever seen. I'm looking at naming my new boat too. Just for fun I went through all the old British Naval boat names, there are some really cool ideas in there.

BW from AZ 03-03-2009 10:13 AM

"BeYonda Budget", Mom was a little different. Carried two flags on her, a "skunk" and the "Over flowing beer mug."

You can't go wrong naming the new boat after the wife.:humpty:

This post/request for help is fraught with potential cynisizm. I am proud of you guys for being nice to the new guy.

Scuttlebutt 03-03-2009 11:44 AM

"My Stimulus" seems appropriate.

Scuttlebutt 03-03-2009 11:48 AM

How 'bout "MY BAILOUT"
