Herring Penn
 

Does anyone in the area make herring penns?

Mike T sells one called the Keep Alive Live Bait system. Its a complete kit and has a 30 gallon tank and an aerator that mixes air with the water as it circulates. One nice feature is that it doesn't have to raise the water above the surface to aerate it so the battery lasts a lot longer. I've had mine for 4 or 5 years now and its great. We can keep about 2 dozen herring alive for as long as the battery lasts. Its alos nice just to go buy the thing and use it. We played around for a few years with our own home made systems and we probably spent just as much and were always having to fix or replace something.

I was looking for a system for my truck, but was thinking of something around 200 gal. Anyone ever seen one for sale?

179..my bud and i drilled 207 1" holes in a bait barrel with the screw on lid. thing worked pissa till the water got too warm.

TRO-200 gallons is alot of weight a good 1400 pounds. could always put a pool into the bed of the truck and rent it out for parties after herring season passes;)

Weight is not a problem. I have a friend who was a 300 gal livewell in his boat. The livewell would be used to transport live bait 100's of miles, hence the large capacity. His was custom made. I was thinking of using one of the commercial style coolers which are approx. 4'x4'x3' which about half full would be around 200 gal. Drawbacks are the thing probably weighs 200 lbs. empty and costs over $500.

TRO - it need to be oval or the herring will beat themselves up and croak in the corners... Good kiddie pool with a big lid? Be tough to get them out...

I gave the kiddie pool idea some thought but I think it's too shallow and definately too flimsy. The inflatable pools by zodiac would be nice but it would be tough to drill it! Heat wouldn't be a problem cause we got ice.

Thanks, I had just thought of that also. What size would you say I need to hold 30-50 herring?

The bigger, the better, up to a point.
You still need to leave room for your boat.
Three feet wide by three feet deep, with half inch mesh should do, but 50 Herring may be pushing it, as the water warms.

Apart from the size of the pen... the stress on the Herring from catching, handling, transporting and the water exchange at your slip, are other major factors in keeping them alive.
