I know it's not fishing related but it is Spring related. These pics wre sent to me recently to try and coax me back. Pics are from 4/21/01
Tucks is a special place. Feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum. I couldn't decide which one fit best. |
I've always wanted to. I don't know if I'd make it down but it would be fun.
|
I would love to do it, but I would need to go with someone very experienced that knows the dangers. I heard that people die there all the time because they make stupid decisions.
I've heard that depending on where you ski down, the climb up is really the most challenging part, is it? |
I did it 10 years in a row up till 01'. Skiing for me was the easiest. The climb is tough and dangerous depending on the route and snow conditions. I done all the runs up there and the hardest is coming over the lip on the main headwall. Steepest sh!t I've ever ski'd and I've been out West and in BC Canada down some scary sh!t but Tucky's is the only hill that takes my breath away!

I think you're missing a key word there....."Alive" Gravity will almost surely guarantee that you WILL make it down..... |

I like the snow but you can have that "hurling yourself down a perfectly good mountain on two sticks" deal! :err: heehee |
My brother did it last year alone, I will never do it I am way to clumsy
|
did it one yearright after college.... it was fun, but don't need to do it again. (I'm too old to get hurt doing that foolish kids stuff now)
|
I hope to ski that some spring. This past summer I hiked with my son that route to the top of Mt. Washington...tough climb!!
|
been skiing well over 40 years, have never skiied Tucks.when the lifts close here at sugarbush, normally around the first of mayi am ready to fish.
|
Haven't done it in a few years. But used to be a spring ritual
|
first time i Ski'd
i slide down the hill
and fall flat on my back sliding like a BIG Y right into a tree crushing my nuts end of Skiing :nailem: |

Did Tucks in late 60s.....
Annual trip when the regular ski areas closed. Packed in tent, sleeping
bag, cook stove, dried food, scotch and equipment--total 70 pounds on an aluminum pack frame. Stayed for a week near Hermit lake. Was in late twenties, early thirties and fit as a fiddle. My buddy took his German shepard along and when we went up to headwall the dog went too. He would hesitate on the edge and as we called up to him, Angus, the whole valley (lunch rocks included) yelled in unison to get him over the headwall. We skiied Huntington Ravine, Lion's Head etc. for a week. Many guys there and a few chicks, mostly Canadian, with their boy friends. If I remember right our Memorial Day weekend was their Queens Birth-day weekend. There was a unwritten rule that one packed out only garbage so food, booze and pot was regularly distributed among those who remained. The pot was given out as the Canucks did not want to take it back home past customs. Good habit. We could count on some returning year after year. I have a thousand slides in my basement, but even if I could find them I could not get them up on this site. Talk about the good old days fishing, God there was something primordal about tipping over the headwall and doing turns in a snow bowl that very few even saw. I mention headwall here with a note of caution, we were reasonably insane to do it. I remember a chunk of ice as large as a pullman train break off the headwall and slide all the way down to settle on the level at the bottom pushing a ridge of snow six feet high in front of it. One year all the shelters were covered up to their roof and walkways cut down to the shelter platform. Needless to say the only hanky panky that year took place on a cold wood rood. How is it today??? Enjoy your youth boys, it goes past damned fast so have those crazy memories to enjoy.. |
enjoyed the story. Sounds like some good times & memories.
