Post St Patricks Day bird action

Did any one happen to notice all the bird action along the Southie to Dorchester waterfront the evening after the parade? Let me preface the rest of this by saying I haven't had a drink in a year and a half. I parked down by the SBYC and left the area heading home towards Dorchester at around 6:00-6:30. Traffic was very slow and the entire time the whole water front, from SBYC all the way behind L St. Bathhouse, Columbia Pt/JFK/UMass to the Gas Tank, was swarmed with birds diving and feeding. I don't mean little patches of birds, I mean the whole place, from close to shore to 300-500 yards out. My wife and two daughters, who wouldn't have noticed if my head was on fire, were with me and even they saw what was going on and were surprised to see it. They have seen striper/blue blitzes with me plenty and know that I'm always watching the water and birds. I didn't see fish coming out of the water, like blues/stripers, but the birds were definitely feeding on something. Any one have any ideas? Some one here must know what was going on?

Fish other than bass and blues gotta eat year round so it happens all the time. The scope may have been quite large but it does happen. Bait still schools up and given the warm temps and perhaps the sun that day, it may have drawn some baitfish into the area and the birds were just doing what birds do.....eat. Just the sight makes you dream doesn't it?;)

A little early for that don't you think? It would be nice though.

could have been gulls working on sea ducks. ducks dive down get the bait and the gulls try to steal it from the ducks.

I've seen the same thing in different areas along the CT coast recently..... don't know what the birds are after:huh:

I was thinking that it might have something to do with the Neponset River myself but it seemed really early for this amount of birds. It looked like someone threw 50 million french fries out there and the birds were just swooping down them. I fish from my kayak on the river and all around Dorchester, Quincy and Southie. I've been thinking about it for the last few days and I can't wait to get out there.
