Opinion on a Fly Line
Looking for some opinions. I am will be fishing Beach and Salt Ponds in South County. Already have a Teeny Line, thinking about adding an intermediate clear line. Recommendations?
|
Airflo Cold Saltwater Polyfuse XT clear blue . Best intermediate line I have ever used. Just one man's opinion.
|
I used a Cortland 9wt intermediate for the past few seasons. I just switched to an Orvis Wonderline 9wt intermediate. I was happy with the Cortland but got a new reel through Orvis and that's what they had around. I'll let you know how it works out.

Fly Lines
A lot of us Long Islanders have switched to the Airflo Forty Plus Intermediate line. It shoots the best of all we have seen and doesn't knot up if pre-stretched. I fish hard and often and the oldest one I have is three seasons. Stripers, Blues, False Albies, Bonito, Jack Crevalls, King Macks, small Tarpon and pig Reds.
Supposedly this line is a half line heavier (ex. 10 wt = 10.5 wt) Works great in our cool waters also. |
a half weight heavier is not a bad thing
|
Just about all of my saltwater lines are Rio and I have no complaints.
|
FWIW, the 40+ is about 2 weights heavier than AFTMA standards. It needs to be because it is an integrated shooting head line utilizing a 30 foot head.

Roger,
Sounds like you know about these lines. I must say that they really don't feel that much heavier. I fish mostly 10 wts through the season, here and down south. I have 10 wt intermediate lines by Wulff, Sci Angler and Cortland and there really doesn't seem to be two sizes difference. I will however give that the running line is thinner and the head shorter. But maybe that is the difference. The local shop who is a very experienced life long fly guy claims 1/2 wt higher. But, it works and that's all that matters. |
Don't misunderstand Scout. I have the line and like it - it was a gift. I also use/make shooting heads. If it were only 1/2 a wt heavier it would not properly load the rod. But there is no reason to guess at this - I simply weighed the line.
