Gitmo prisoner release-
Looks like one of the jails being considered to hold them
will be in Alexandria Va. How can they consider a populated area near DC like this? |
It's not like these are Marvel super evil doers...I'd wager they'd need a maximum security prison to keep the other inmates from killing them.
Most of those sent to GITMO in the first place were just lacky's who were caught fighting US troops in Afghanistan, most were released. I think the bulk of what's left are people who's home countries didn't want to take them back. This is a PR risk if anything, not a security risk. -spence |

Do these people have super powers, or will they incite a some Jihadi troops to attack the US for their rescue? You're missing the point. I didn't say that all those who were left were lacky's, but rather that the easy ones were let go and those that were left we couldn't find a home for. Reread my initial post. That being said, it's easy to want to attack the US or our interests, you just have to do it...that doesn't make you any more dangerous than anyone else who wants to do us harm. If we do have a good reason to believe those left at GITMO are dangerous, then keeping them locked up is probably going to be more of a PR issue than a security issue...as I've already said. -spence |
Allah will knock down the wall :splat:

A lot of the ones we have that we know are extremely dangerous, if tried under US law, will get released in the US as nobody else will take them. On the battlefield a marine doesnt have the time, training or materials to collect evidence and get statements from witnesses. It will be the prisoners word against the marines word, but the marine will be out on his 4th or 5th deployment and unable to testify against him, so he'll walk. We sure as hell can't ferry marines back and forth from Afghanistan to testify in a US court. Without the military courts, these guys will be released after a short jaunt through our judicial system. No evidence, no witnesses and arresting officer is unavailable to testify, perfect recipe for a disaster.

If you point a gun at an American soldier you have voided your rights in my opinion. If you plan to bring harm to America or any of its properties you again have voided your rights.
It is time to stop coddling the ones that were trying to harm/kill us. It's time to stop letting the media pressure the people in power to be a kinder , gentler US. |
The closer to Washington, the better. JK
While I'm sure there are prisoners there that just got caught up in a bad situation, for the most part they are radicals that want to kill you and your children. Gitmo works, why change it and at what risk and expense? What purpose does it serve to close gitmo? |

There are still inmates at GITMO that have been cleared of all terrorism charges, but their home country won't take them, or in the case of China would probably prosecute them. They have discussed releasing some of these prisoners into the US as an option. I've not seen anyone talking of simply releasing dangerous inmates into the US because of a technicality, nor do I belive for a second this would happen. The irony is that had Bush actually had any conservative principals we probably wouldn't have this mess in the first place. Either shoot them on the battlefield or follow the rule of International law that we've previously agreed to. The longer we keep GITMO open the longer that eyesore is used to generate sympathy for our real enemies. -spence |
drop them off in the middle of desert of their own country
and say start walkin ......... with the firm knowledge that if they are seen or caught shooting at us again they will be killed  bu-bye |

Quick side story... I was at #^^^^&'s picking up some gear and I started chatting with a guy buying a wire trap. I asked him if he had a raccoon problem, "No, squirrels" he says. This guy then goes on to tell me about how he spray paints the tails that neon orange color and then takes them off deep into the woods. If they show up again and he sees the orange, he shoots them. Now, the illegality of transporting a wild animal aside, I think this is a fantastic idea. Tattoo the bastards and if seen again, *bang* they're done. None of this taking enemy combatants prisoner a second time. Illegal boarder hoppers may start thinking twice - and they're illegals, thus technically have no right to due process under our constitution. But I've always been a fan of restricted zones at the Boarder where anything that moves is given one change to turn around and head back the way they came, then is shot on site. |
There are already terrorists, of all stripes, equally if not more dangerous than the gitmo boys, already locked up -away from you and me- in US prisons. Its not like there sending these guys to a county jail near you.

Being they will be kept in a suburban jail and the slogan "the war on terror" is dropped, all the Islamic Radicals, if that is PC?, will drop their arms and give us all a big hug. |
I always thought US prisons were a breeding ground for muslim converts among the african american prisoners? I recall seeing a documentary years ago on this.

the problem with that IDEA is that hostile insurgents or terrorists cannot be compared side by side to illegal aliens that come to America to pick oranges, apples, strawberries, or any other crop. the enormous agricultural areas of the west dictate the necessity of hiring cheap labor because the legal immigrants will not do the work. Those guys can earn more in a single afternoon illegally then they could make in an entire month legally ->so why would they? restricted zones don't work either because you can just tunnel under them. PEOPLE can easily manufacture false identification to cross the border legally and then work here illegally. |
