Thanks for the reminder, John - I already installed the latest version of my AVG which is set for daily scans and made sure I had the MS08-067 patch -

I'm set for automatic updates from MS but checked anyway and had a small patch to download -

The Mrs also got an email at work today from their geeks about a "ransom-ware" virus called Vundo that encrypts jpegs, PDF's and Word docs - and then the pranksters sell you a product for $40 to decrypt your files again -

So anyway, whaddya think, Cap - is there gonna be a denial-of-service attack for April Fools Day or not....:huh:

And would shutting off your computer on the 1st be effective - or would the worm just do it's dirty work once you power up again anyway?

This virus is truly most evil. It recently attacked my PC like a machine gun. Avast AV could not keep up with it. I could not load AV updates or any MS fixes. I was being controlled from a remote host and had my AOL passwords compromised. I had to start fresh with a new computer :realmad:

MS has put a $250K bounty out for the originators.
I hope they catch them &:hang: them :fury:

Update all your windows machine, if you cannot get to the msupdate site you got it.
My printer had it also, as it was windows based, that was fun.

Its about once a year that these things come out, that is, something that is SUPPOSED to be big virus. And sometimes it does happen. Id like to see it happen, seeing that Im a tech who's job has gone to India and will be out of work in a matter of months.

Thanks for the heads up John. I just loaded a bunch of updates. I guess I was a bit behind. Of course I have Russian anti-virus software, so I feel pretty good about that part. :)

it infects a site, you hit the site it gets downloaded,
its in quicktime and other trojans.
once its on a network it starts to spread from machine to machine

i heard recently.......this morning

it's supposed to be hidden in a small graphic... the down-loader

also i heard that if you can go to your anti virus software site
and download the latest update for virus signatures then you don't have
the worm
as it's supposed to be able to block those sites.

Banking officials there reportedly said the Microsoft Windows-based based bank system began disbursing the bills after a local prankster crammed an infected USB stick into the maw of the teller machine.
- Londoners woke up to find the iconic clock tower Big Ben stopped at precisely one minute till midnight. The British tabloids blared that the giant timepiece had been felled by the Conficker worm. But security officials reasoned that the beloved landmark -- legendary for its reliability -- would have stopped exactly one minute later had the expected 12:00 a.m. updates to Conficker actually been the culprit. Several members of Parliament are now calling for a full investigation into the incident.
- In Waukesha, Wis., Leroy "Mac" MacElrie, 64, turned himself in to local police, claiming he was the author of the original Conficker worm, and that all of the subsequent versions were mere copycats. According to charging documents, MacElrie said he wrote the worm to get back at Microsoft founder Bill Gates for "not stopping spam by 2008 like he said he would." The man was released on his own recognizance, but several hours later a local television station captured footage of the man standing on a nearby street corner repeatedly shouting "I'm the conficker!"
