Soooo close!

Took my 5 year old son to the driving range this afternoon. It was pouring out, but we were under cover and what the heck, it's only water, right? After whacking a bunch, he notices worms squirming around in all the puddles and he has completely lost his interest in golf.

What to do? Hey buddy, let's grab up some ogf those worms and go fishing? "Great idea Dad". YES!! After grabbing about 50 worms, we head over to the local bluegill hole. I have caught a few decent bass there, as well as some 18" pickerel, but nothing huge, though I have seen a few good ones.

I have a worm on a bobber for him, and I am tossing a new Storm stickbait(NICE). About my 5th cast, in heavy mist, I get a hit and immediately hand him the rod. The rod doubles and the drag starts to sqeak. YIKES! Then it boils, HOLY ^&%()!! Has to be 6# easy. He is asking for help, but I just tell him to keep the rod up and keep reeling. He is doing great, and then the pig comes up and tries to tailwalk, but she is too fat to get out of the water! Right in front of us, about 3' from shore, is a patch of reeds. Sure enough, the bass heads right into them.

Without thinking, I am up to my knees and she is laying right in front of me. The plug is hanging out of her mouth and I those blood red hooks look nasty. I grab the leader(15# on 6# fireline) and inch her onto the reeds. I am just about to lip her when POP! The leader snaps! She is still laying there and I have both arms in up to my shoulders trying to corral her, alas, to no avail. Would have let her go anyway, but would have killed for the picture.

Go get 'em guys, and bring a kid.

Great story! I still remember similar experiences with my Dad - some of my best memories growing up :)

great story

before the grass gets too tall

ya gotta teach him how to pull night crawlers at night

with a little red flash light ... (and some stealth crawling)

go to walmart and buy some of their worm bedding

first though...pre soak it and fill up an old cooler with it

That young lad has a great future ahead of him, Rick - what a great story, something you'll both always remember!

That's what it's all about, too...:kewl:

Good show by the angler, too bad the old gaffer with him fumbled, though...:hihi:

Too funny, and too true. He's seen me catch some pretty good stripers so he doesn't really put into perspective what a good bass this was. But the time he can relate, it will probably be a 10#er.

We finished the night off with a few pizza's, watched madagascar 2 and fell asleep watching Hunt For Big Fish. One of the best days of my life.

Sounds perfect too me. Thanks for sharing this cool day with us. I'm planning to do that tomorrow with my boy.

Good for him!

He'll remember that his entire life!

Cappa, have a great time with your boy. I will be in Marshfield for Easter with my guy. Any good freshwater spots in the area?
