FW lures in SW
 

Have any of you tried a spinner bait or a buzz bait in salt water? Wondering if they would work.

I picked up one of those peacock bass woodchoppers a year or two ago and still have not tried it. I replaced the hooks with 6X mvc's and wanted to try is when I got in the vicinity of a pack of yellowfins but it has not seen the water yet. (so many plugs so little time) It looked so cool on TV I was dying to cast it and see something big explode on it.

I have used spinner baits and rattle traps for stripers....and they do work.....I was at a bait shop and saw some saltwater spinnerbaits and buzzbaits.....but havent seen them since....they were just huge models of the freshwater ones.....

those wood choppers make so much commotion there's simply no way the fish couldn't find it....

whether that's what turns on a TUNA ......remains to be seen

I've been meaning to use a spinnerbait for years. You would think it would have to work.

I'm sure a bluefish would tear either spinner or buzzbaits apart. It would be super cool to see a 25lb. stripe blow up on a buzz!

I've used dozens of freshwater lures with varying degrees of success for stripes, fluke, bluefish, weakfish, and bonito.

Propeller baits work great, but cast poorly. The Arbogast dasher came in several saltwater versions. I think the Surf Oreno was a prop bait. I've used the Heddon zara-spook sized prop baits along the Elizabeths with plenty of success. Too light for most of what I fish, however.

Bob Pond marketed a LMB style crankbait weighing about an oz. Never tried it much. Probably it would work.

Years ago I tried a large Musky Mepps spinner. Caught a few fish, but the drag from the big spinner during the retrieve was annoying (much like reeling in an umbrella rig). It really didn't feel like plugging (no chance to add action or work the lure) and I dropped it.

On the flip side, eels work good on largemouth bass.....figured Numbskull would find it of interest...

Figures. All I could ever catch in freshwater were pickerel and starving perch. Used to liveline the latter for the former before I developed a conscience, some self-respect, and a over-blown ego.

FYI, White marlin eat eels too. :uhuh:
I even saw Sauerkraut try one for Giant Tuna once..........talk about the mother of all eel knots :rotf2:

A modified Buchertail Depthraider is the best plug freshwater plug I've used for stripers. A deep diver by design primarily used for muskie - I grind down the lip and load it with water. Great plug for big water.
8 inches, 2 1/4 oz (3 oz after loading). Taken a few over 40 with them. Might have to mail order as they are not available locally.
